Are teams REQUIRED to keep a certain number of players during the preseason? I'm wondering because if I'm a player who is on the bubble and maybe leaning towards not making the team, I would want to be released early enough to catch on with another team if I feel my position has need in the league. Anyone know?

IIRC The bylaws only place limits on the maximum number of players on a roster.. It's in the team's best interest to have a full roster to have enough bodies for practices and roster evaluation as a whole. All those players are under contract and obligated to participate under threat of fine. It might be in a players' best interest to request a release or trade, but the team wouldn't be under any obligation to do so.

In 2010/2011, bodies were rotating in and out of camp like crazy. Now that the team is strong enough and deep enough (that's what she said), there's a lot less turnover in the ranks as the coaches evaluate the talent they do have. And since a lot of these guys are fringe talents who may not receive the same level of coaching on other teams as they do here, it's in their best interest to keep them around as long as possible so they can potentially build a real career.
