Seem the ref that threw the flag saw it from behind the play. I'm sure it looked like a face mask penalty too him.
Guess you really can't fault him.

While I completely understand what your saying about the ref, I cant think this isnt good enough. We, millions of viewers, have instant view through replay that it didnt happen, at a 12 second delay. The league has instant access to the feed. They could tell the ref almost instantly to hold on for 5 seconds, "Stop, 5 seconds, reviewing, no facemask, reverse call."

Its time for them to admit that can do better. They can call it instantly and overturn penalties before the next play. It would barely slow down the game. But they dont, because why?

That's especially true in this particular case since there is no game clock to worry about. No reason not to take your time. If the penalty wasn't warranted (and it wasn't), then declare the game over.

At this point, if the league ever wanted to sound credible, they could declare this game a lions victory, overturning the current result. I know it sound ridiculous, but its been requested for less grievous offenses and never applied. This one ended with no time left. A faulty, bad penalty was called. It should have, and if wasnt, 100% would have given the lions the victory. No questions asked.

I think this would set a terrible precedent that would lead to teams complaining about the outcome of games due to questionable calls more frequently than we'd ever want to see.

I already have to wait to celebrate a touchdown to see if there's a bullshit penalty or if the receiver had completed the process of the catch by fully accepting the ball into his heart. I don't want to have to wait for the appeals process to go through prior to celebrating a win.

But then the NFL can't "steer results"' towards legacy teams. When you have a talented team, sometimes all they need is that one extra play or break to win a game.

It's all about the $$$. The more legacy teams in the playoffs the more mechandise is sold the more money the NFL gets. It's simple math and dollars.

Back to the play, if the Lions DB's are that bad, they should have had Tate, Megatron, and Pettigrew (sp?) in on the last play.

If they wanted to throw the game to the Packers they would have called the pass interference the play before.

Lions straight up blew this one. Dude who caught it wasn't even covered. Have you ever seen an easier hail Mary catch?

No issues with the penalty....lions need to do better there

Lions shouldn't have had to do better. Game should have been over if officiated properly.

Any of the other refs with a better view should have stepped in to overrule. Instead, the umpire threw the flag and announced the penalty all within about 3 seconds. Didnt even give any time to consult.

And because he was wrong, he played a part in costing the Lions a victory.

Disagree.

Hand hit face mask and we can debate all day long about the extent but when it happened I'd bet everyone thought it was a penalty.

It's not reviewable. Judgment call and sit left the Packers needing to complete a 61 yard pass.

This is on the LIons only in my opinion. No conspiracy

I don't even care that much about the penalty. I care that no one is talking about it. An obscure rule that no one has ever heard of isn't called on the Seahawks against the Lions, on what would've amounted to losing on a technicality, and all we hear about is how egregious it is.

We all know the outcry after the MNF game against the Packers.

But the Packers get a gift extra play on a phantom facemask, which ends up being the difference between winning and losing? They all scramble to justify the call and praise the Packers.

9 minutes into the post game show, still no mention of it. All just licking Erin's sack.

The stupid endzone penalty that wasnt on MNF was talked about non stop for hours/days....

Why the double standard?

We all know why. No one is going to castigate the refs in this instance, just like no one talked about the phantom PI that gave Green Bay a chance to beat us three years ago.

Bad calls happen all the time. Teams win games like this sometimes. I don't begrudge it - just call it what it is - a gift extra play they never should have had, and then an excellent play. It's OK - it won't hurt anything to admit the Packers 'should' have lost, but that they still executed a fantastic comeback.

Anyways, still a great game to watch.

Right.

Hawk fans are much less bitter if the talking heads were at least mentioning the blown facemask call after all of the fake indignation over similar Seattle wins over the years.

At least be consistent, talking heads. Be consistent.

I didnt say anything about conspiracies or reviews.

Refs huddle up all the time before announcing a penalty. They could have done so here. The guy who threw the flag couldnt see that there was no grab, and needed help.

The Lions shouldnt have had to defend a hail mary. The game should have been over.

If you look at that last play again, notice the LB on Rodgers right side. He drops in coverage about 20 yds and then loafs. If he attacks the LOS after he has passed off that WR, Rodgers doesn't have a clean throw without pressure in his face.

And as I mentioned, the NFLN folks show how the guy who grabbed at the shoulder/facemask just had to box in Rodgers and take him down. Game is over.

Two examples of why the Lions are 4-8. Stupid football.

Rodgers was completely alone and had no one to lateral to. The tackler for the lions shouldn't have come in high. There was literally nowhere for Rodgers to go and no one to lateral to. Just collect yourself and make a tackle. All the crying over the face mask in lion land is over looking the defender taking an unnecessary risk. I mean Rodgers was ALL alone, dead to rights. Why are you even within one foot of his helmet?.

Ridgers did a BEAUTIFUL job selling the failmask

He turned his head with the hand making it look 100% like his mask was pulled. Then sitting there he clearly made it look like he should get a flag

Nicely done but that sucked for Seattle

Packers just got gifted one and their fans are going apeshit without a mention of the non-facemask. I seriously think packers fans are the worst fans in sports

You can't pass the straight face test if you actually think that was a penalty. If you really think it was a facemask, read the rule:

No player shall grasp and control, twist, turn, push, or pull the facemask of an opponent in any direction.

Note: If a player grasps an opponent’s facemask, he must immediately release it. If he does not immediately release it and controls his opponent, it is a foul.

None of that happened on that play. The game should have been over. I think we're all getting a bit tired of referees directly deciding the outcomes of games. Lions fans are justifiably upset, and we would be too had that been us. No way was that a facemask penalty.

I've seen quite a few stills of that "penalty" and based on the actual rule, a facemask never occurred.

Anyone watch the last play again and see four GB offensive linemen holding the Detroit defensive line? That was pretty bad, but of course no one will talk about that. It's hero worship for Aaron Rodgers for the next 48 hours.

What is up with the Lions coaches? How do you not have Megatron and Ebron on defense for that play? Throw some tall guys out there with great hands so that crap doesn't happen.

Almost as hypocritical as the Stealer fans crying about the refs last Sunday.

I don't want to here Erin or any packer fan ever whine again.

Why do you think? The Packers are NFL Royalty. The Seahawks are the Thugs from South Alaska.

Erin even said "i've been on the other side of one of these"

Yeah lets remember that you all went into the locker room, nearly refused to come back out for the PAT and then bitched all week about it in the media. I hate the packers so much.
