Guess you really can't fault him.
While I completely understand what your saying about the ref, I cant think this isnt good enough. We, millions of viewers, have instant view through replay that it didnt happen, at a 12 second delay. The league has instant access to the feed. They could tell the ref almost instantly to hold on for 5 seconds, "Stop, 5 seconds, reviewing, no facemask, reverse call."
Its time for them to admit that can do better. They can call it instantly and overturn penalties before the next play. It would barely slow down the game. But they dont, because why?
That's especially true in this particular case since there is no game clock to worry about. No reason not to take your time. If the penalty wasn't warranted (and it wasn't), then declare the game over.
At this point, if the league ever wanted to sound credible, they could declare this game a lions victory, overturning the current result. I know it sound ridiculous, but its been requested for less grievous offenses and never applied. This one ended with no time left. A faulty, bad penalty was called. It should have, and if wasnt, 100% would have given the lions the victory. No questions asked.
I think this would set a terrible precedent that would lead to teams complaining about the outcome of games due to questionable calls more frequently than we'd ever want to see.
I already have to wait to celebrate a touchdown to see if there's a bullshit penalty or if the receiver had completed the process of the catch by fully accepting the ball into his heart. I don't want to have to wait for the appeals process to go through prior to celebrating a win.
