At minimum that was a 5 yard face mask. 15 was kind of iffy, but I don't doubt it looked like a 15 yard penalty to the ref.

I thought it was a15 at first glance. Only the replay showed it was less but the ref had already called it. I don't fault them for the call.

There is no 'incidental' facemask anymore. That was a rule change made a couple years ago. If it would have been incidental under the old rule, it was not supposed to be called.

I don't even care that much about the penalty. I care that no one is talking about it. An obscure rule that no one has ever heard of isn't called on the Seahawks against the Lions, on what would've amounted to losing on a technicality, and all we hear about is how egregious it is.

We all know the outcry after the MNF game against the Packers.

But the Packers get a gift extra play on a phantom facemask, which ends up being the difference between winning and losing? They all scramble to justify the call and praise the Packers.

9 minutes into the post game show, still no mention of it. All just licking Erin's sack.

The stupid endzone penalty that wasnt on MNF was talked about non stop for hours/days....

Why the double standard?

Seem the ref that threw the flag saw it from behind the play. I'm sure it looked like a face mask penalty too him.
Guess you really can't fault him.

While I completely understand what your saying about the ref, I cant think this isnt good enough. We, millions of viewers, have instant view through replay that it didnt happen, at a 12 second delay. The league has instant access to the feed. They could tell the ref almost instantly to hold on for 5 seconds, "Stop, 5 seconds, reviewing, no facemask, reverse call."

Its time for them to admit that they can do better. They can call it instantly and overturn penalties before the next play. It would barely slow down the game. But they dont, because why?

What a hell of a finish! That was amazing. Must suck to be a Lions fan right now.

Right now? It has sucked long before now.
Well they won three games in a row and almost won four. They looked like a team on the upswing.

That's especially true in this particular case since there is no game clock to worry about. No reason not to take your time. If the penalty wasn't warranted (and it wasn't), then declare the game over.

I swear, the Lions are snakebit every bit as bad as Cleveland. The day I watch the Lions and the Browns in the Super Bowl is the day I stop watching football. Nothing more to see.

I don't feel bad for the Lions. But the call was bullshit. A ref guessed on a penalty he didn't actually see. Which reeks of Jordan Rules.

But no matter. The head of referees will defend the call.

Also, the Lions are a very talented bad team. Like the Rams.

Lions should've had Calvin in on that last play. Dude would've definitely picked the ball.

We all know why. No one is going to castigate the refs in this instance, just like no one talked about the phantom PI that gave Green Bay a chance to beat us three years ago.

Bad calls happen all the time. Teams win games like this sometimes. I don't begrudge it - just call it what it is - a gift extra play they never should have had, and then an excellent play. It's OK - it won't hurt anything to admit the Packers 'should' have lost, but that they still executed a fantastic comeback.

Anyways, still a great game to watch.

At this point, if the league ever wanted to sound credible, they could declare this game a lions victory, overturning the current result. I know it sound ridiculous, but its been requested for less grievous offenses and never applied. This one ended with no time left. A faulty, bad penalty was called. It should have, and if wasnt, 100% would have given the lions the victory. No questions asked.

Cannot review judgement calls. Once it is called, on to the next play.

Dude wasn't thinking. Rodgers couldn't throw it forward so he could have throttled it down and just make Rodgers run backwards. Yeah I know, sounds simple now.

EDIT: Give it a break on the league should award the Lions the victory talk. That is the same crap Lindsay Rhodes was asking Pete after the Fail Mary. People need to just accept things and stop trying to change things that have been recorded. Debate it but come on, there is too much ambiguity as it is. Lions can only blame themselves.

But then the NFL can't "steer results"' towards legacy teams. When you have a talented team, sometimes all they need is that one extra play or break to win a game.

It's all about the $$$. The more legacy teams in the playoffs the more mechandise is sold the more money the NFL gets. It's simple math and dollars.

Back to the play, if the Lions DB's are that bad, they should have had Tate, Megatron, and Pettigrew (sp?) in on the last play.

Upon further review, my original call of the facemask penalty being correct, has been reversed. I slowed down their slow motion, the thumb grazes the face mask, then the tackle is made by the shoulder pad.
