OL needs improvement but OL also needs continuity. Let's predict our OL for next season?

Cross and Lucas will be back, Olu too either as starter if not backup. Will Schneider bring Laken back for another one year deal? Or move Christian Haynes to LG? The RG position may be Laumea or Bradford,?

Will we draft another guard? Or a swing tackle to replace Stone?

I think 4 spots are set at the moment. Cross, Olu, Laumea and Lucas barring any setbacks. I'm 50/50 on what we will do with LG. I want them to sign a top (not aging) LG but I also think we will be picking in the 20's so if Will Campbell falls (will be more of a guard in the NFL or can trade back a little for Tyler Booker, the top natural guard in college football. Not sure which way we will end up going but that and NT are the only 2 real needs as of right now.

I like Haynes I just think he will take a couple years which tells me to sign a veteran, but I think I'd rather draft the top guard and be set for a long time

I'm not sure I could've said it any better myself. However, I'd prefer the draft though over a FA.

They seem to draft OL every year, and I like that. Have to keep guys in the chain moving up. With 4 guys still on rookie deals, they're cheap, too. :)

Not sure how high they'll pick an OL, but I'm sure they'll grab at least 1 or 2. I believe we have a full draft class. The team isn't looking like it has a lot of extreme needs this coming year, though I'm sure some holes will form when FA hits. We do have a few guys on 1 year deals. Hopefully, they can sign J4 to a long term deal. Which is to say they should have a lot of BPA opportunities. If there is a top guard falling to us, by all means grab him.

Yes! This. Of all the positions, OL is the most about coaching and technique. It's much easier to take a drafted player who hasn't been in the NFL and teach him the technique you want than to take a FA and make it work. Cheaper, too.

IMO, we should draft two college-starting LG's since we don't really have anyone decent at that position. I'm not advocating back to back LG picks, but one in the 2-3 range and another in the 5-7 range

Time to pony up for a free agent guard. Balance. We have 3 to 4 guys on rookie deals. We need a prized pig. Where to get the money?

There are some guys with big contracts.

A free agent is proven and can deliver right away.

Meh. This isn't baseball, where a 2B is a 2B and you can plug and play. OG needs to blend in with the program and learn to play with his fellows. I'd rather go young and cheap. ;)

Besides, there hasn't been a lot of FA movement among OL the past few years. I think teams are preferring to get young guys and coach them up.

Donovan Jackson is my guy to draft at LG (Thank Laken Thomlinson for his service but they will no longer be needed)

If Haynes isn't going to crack the starting guard rotation, should we teach him to be a backup center?

a backup swing tackle later in the draft also please

Cross
Jackson
Olu
Lamea
Lucas

I would be happy with these starters.

Drafting interior lineman in the top half of the first round is usually a waste, but now that it looks more likely we'll be picking somewhere in the mid-20s, I'd be fine with it depending on who's there.

I don't know what to do about Haynes. I didn't expect him to dominate right off the bat, but the learning curve has narrowed for his position as a whole, and he has shown less than nothing. I'm not sure how you can go into next season counting on him as of now.

I really don't think Forsythe is a bad backup, but he's a free agent anyway. I wouldn't be against giving him the vet min if he doesn't find better on the market.

Tomlinson played well last week, but I'm not re-signing him as of now.

Olu is interesting. He's good enough where using decent capital, whether that's free agency or the draft, feels unnecessary, but if someone who is an obvious upgrade falls to a good spot in the draft, I'm not against that either.

Guys like Lameua and Jarrell, I just see as backups with potential. I wouldn't go into next year with either being the plan for a starter spot.

The next 4 games will tell us if we need new C or RG. If we do, I would keep Laken for another season so we have some continuity.

What are the highest priorities in the draft? In reality, it seems like (as long as EJones is coming back) OG is the highest priority at every round. If there's a Guard rated near the pick, take them. If not, bpa or trade back for highest rated OG. It's really the only "must" in this off-season.

I think center and a guard spot are up for grabs although Olu could play himself into a starter role next year.

Depends on how the O-line finishes. If they remain in the range of the past weekend (or better), then best case is get Laken back on a friendly deal, add a high potential FA OG if available to compete, and draft verified talent for depth when available. Olu would remain starter going into the season, hopefully with competition. Need to groom for Cross/Abe backups and future potential. It may be difficult to keep them in a couple years.

That's a base strategy, play the cards as they fall.

Can Anthony Bradford or Christian Haynes be better at LG than RG?

Cross, Lucus, Olo, Laumea are the only safe ones... Haynes is a 50/50 unless he shows great improvements in the offseason, as far as the rest they will be fighting for jobs this offseason
