Niners reportedly sideline Purdy again

This is an interesting little sideshow. I haven't been following it that closely, but it would *seem* that Purdy would want to get back on the field ASAP before Jones become any more entrenched as a reliable QB. When I think about this, contracts and all, you'd think they'd keep them both for at least another year. Like someone said, it's a good problem to have, and the money situation is pretty much set and accounted for through next season, I believe.

I know one thing. It would take a lot for me to feel sorry for anyone making the kind of money Purdy is. LOL

Numerous rationales exist for starting Mac indefinitely.

First, that “hop” that Purdy is doing is causing throws high and behind. Eighty five percent the Tonges catch should have been intercepted, validated as seen in the four turnover Jacksonville game. Purdy should be practicing to the extent he can with his starting defense. It was them who first vouched for Purdy back in 2022, and it’s they who can provide real time info on how effective Purdy is not just with the offense but against a defense.

Meanwhile, Mac is winning 6-2. What’s the rationale for rushing things?

It would be interesting to see what the league wide interest would be in Purdy.

What teams would take him and his contract?

I suspect the interest to be minimal. He won six games for 2024 5 has only been available for two in 25. Who would take on a 53M apy contract at this point?

There are worse things for a team than to have two competent starting QBs. Too bad the whiners don't have a lousy backup like most of the other teams in the league.
THIS, and we have two super-competent QBs, too.

Right? But would anyone else want him at his current price?

For 2026, doubt it. Same with Burrow. Like Purdy, Joe Burrow has an expensive contract that he failed to live up to last year, and like Purdy, he isn’t playing for the exact same injury.

Yeah it does. Means you’re stuck paying a backup $53 mil a year to ride pine when totally healthy
I was referring to any complaints Purdy might lodge, not the money the Niners might be wasting. If Jones keeps winning, it won't much matter what Purdy has to say about it.

And the Niners decided to give him his first team defensive reps.

Purdy needs to practice getting the “hop” out of his step that results in throws being inaccurate, and his own starting defense is his best gauge as to see whether he can do it while in a redshirt. If he does excellent, the Niners sliding him in as qb2 might fly for a couple of games after which fans will be increasingly asking why their starter is active not the starter. I fully get @flv2 example of having Wolford take a beating until hurt at which point Stafford came in and won but it’s by far less acceptable to be seating the starter behind the backup for up to a half season tbd.

One reason swaying Kyle might be that his seventh round Qb is nearing health from his college acl. Kyle loves this guy just as McVay loved Stetson Bennett while considering Adrian Martinez kind of an extended camp body. Kyle would rather Kurtis be soaking in the game environment with the assurance that no qb3 has been called upon for emergency duties since the rule was enacted.

You know, when Steve Young is saying Purdy should complain, he has the experience to make said comment. A team can’t just trot its 53M starter backing up the 5M backup for a whole half season. Either Jones will win increasing the sentiment the team is better off, or he will skid in which case the fans will demand Purdys immediate return.
