... I suppose ten years later, the cat would get out of the bag, and the Seahawks' five straight Super Bowl wins would be stripped from the records.
In all seriousness, I will hate to see Clint Gresham go. He's been my "adopt a player" for a while. The dude will sign autographs until his arm falls off at training camp, by the way...
This is precisely what the 49ers did, and why when their fans start spouting off about their rings, I just want to smack the taste out of their mouth. The Cowboys did some really fishy stuff as well. Deion Sanders was under some "personal service contracts" with the Cowboys and 49ers at different points as he bounced between teams. This was shady as heck.
The same thing happened in the NBA and was the only reason the Utah Jazz were relevant throughout the 90's. They couldn't afford John Stockton and Karl Malone in their market, but they were able to set up multiple car dealerships for both of them and they didn't get nailed by the NBA on it. Eventually the Larry Bird rule went into effect and they were able to keep Malone happy with max + money, and Stockton decided he didn't want to play anywhere else, but things were dicey for a while, and without the "personal services" deals they had (free car dealerships courtesy of Larry H. Miller) then it is highly likely Malone and Stockton both would have ended up in Portland or Seattle (which is where they both hinted they wanted to go for several years running with their 'like playing in the rain' comments, which makes sense considering Stock is from Washington and Malone wanted to stick with Stock but make max +).
