I know Michael Bowie is a rookie but I like his chances against J. Smith if you look at who Bowie has faced this year J.J. Watt, Saints pass rush twice, and others has prepared Bowie for this game and Justin Smith is the final test. Michael Bowie has the size 6'4 332 lbs that made James Carpenter some what successful against Smith in the past but Bowie has more agility and quickness than Carpenter ever had so i think Bowie will bring unexpected production (to media/fans outside of seattle) to sundays game.

I'm hopeful and think Bowie is up for it. Russell needs it. To me, benching Carpenter indicates that the coaches think Russell's performance has been due to having no trust in his o-line. It takes a LOT for our coaches to mess with continuity and non-injury shuffling of the depth chart. For them, that move is as close as they come to desperation.

I like bowie's potential as much as the next guy but to "like his chances" against Smith is insane.

Hes gonna have to have the game of his life as the Niners run many twists and stunts to free up their guys. He is gonna have to be on his game as well as the rest of the oline.

Carp matched up pretty well against Justin Smith. Hopefully Bowie will do the same.

Bowie has a fighting chance against Justin Smith. You have to be a big, powerful dude to overcome all of the undetected holding Justin does and Bowie already has that. He has a strong base, quick feet, and brain, the latter being something Carpenter doesn't have much of and the former is what McQuistan lacks.

Bowie will naturally need to make adjustments early in the game, because he hasn't faced anyone quite the same as Smith, but I think he'll do just fine as the game progresses. Hopefully there won't be outcome-affecting events that happen while he's adjusting. :|

Bowie will do well. He's smart, athletic and adapts quickly. It is amazing how he had been thrown in at left tackle, right guard, and finally, left guard. He had played very well for a rookie that has been shuffled around to positions he had never played.

I think he has a chance to "outquick" justin smith and beat him to the punch.

I expect a lot of running Sunday and 120 yards for Marshawn Lynch.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Bowie considered to be a much better run blocker than Carpenter? In terms of getting your run game going (from what I've read at least) Bowie is viewed as the better fit.

I'm not convinced the 49ers will run a tremendous amount of stunts on the line this week. It can open up run lanes for Wilson. Taking that away is a key part of of getting a win.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Pete say that the starter for this week at LG was yet to be determined?
I will not be surprised if Carp gets the start because of his track record vs Smith.
