This reminds me of the Redskins and Snyder, can't get out of the way and fires coaches and keeps the GM that assembles the team. Snyder fired some pretty good coaches, he was impatient as well. Buffalo is the Top bad luck and bad bounce team in my lifetime, followed by the Vikings.

That's why I sort of thought Harbaugh would take the Miami job - he was supposedly going to get to hire the GM. I don't have a good feel for Buffalo's GM/ownership, but McDermott proved he was a good coach. He'll succeed somewhere else.

Hard to see us and Rams not losing multiple coaches at this point with all the vacancies
McDermott and Tomlin will take two of the remaining 8 spots...probably. They will have their picks, which I assume will be Baltimore, Tennessee and Buffalo. I see Tomlin taking Tennessee or Buffalo, and McDermott going to Baltimore. That leaves one spot that isn't a shit show. I don't see us losing Klint Kubiak - also, he's got his coaching-savvy Dad to warn him against most of these positions. Gary Kubiak waited patiently behind John Elway for a helluva long time - perhaps patience is in Klint's genes?

You mean the guy who has been employed by five teams over the past five seasons?

I hope he's smart enough to not just take any job, but if he's offered the Ravens, Steelers, or Bills gig, he'd be crazy not to accept.

I think if they had said 'no catch', it would have stuck and McDermott would have gotten an extra game. But it was similar to the Harbaugh/Tomlin situation. The owners were ready to fire these guys well in advance.

Those decisions were lateral moves. He was fired by Minnesota, then upgraded to Seattle from New Orleans. Staying at NO would have indicated 'stupidity', not 'patience.

Taking a head coaching job right now - not so smart.

Going into a high-profile job that you aren't prepared for is crazy IMO. We'll see - I wish him the best, no matter what ends up happening. Hopefully he gets one of those jobs, does great, and I eat crow.

Tomlin is still under contract until 2027. He "stepped down" and was not fired, so any team that wants to hire him would need to come to an agreement with the Steelers.

I forgot that the Steelers have an opening too, I can see McDermott going there. That may be the safest place for him to go to as they cling on to coaches for a long time. They have a solid defense in place with Watt, Heyward, etc.

Oh my. This is so wrong. It was amazing the Bills got this far with the roster that they have. McDermott is one of the top coaches in the league, and I can't imagine that the Bills are going to find someone who will improve the situation in Buffalo.

I looked up McDermott's record in Buffalo. He's 98-50 over 9 seasons (.662). Why would you fire someone like that? And even with Josh Allen as QB, are you going to lure a top coach who has other choices to live in western New York, in friggin' Buffalo?

This is not going to end well for the Bills. Terry Pegula turns out to be just another dumbass billionaire owner.

McDermott is also still young. He's only 51, even though he looks like he's 66.

Let's hope to God that McDermott doesn't end up in Arizona.
Great post.

A friend of mine at work and I said the same thing . The guy is a winning coach , why not fix what's broken maybe bring in another coach or two and fix the roster .

I don't think they're going to get a better coach than what they had

Mike Shanahan's coaching staff with the Washington Redskins from 2010 to 2013 included notable figures such as his son Kyle Shanahan (offensive coordinator), Sean McVay (tight ends), Matt LaFleur (quarterbacks), and Mike McDaniel (offensive assistant).

And Allen’s post game interview.. my buddy that’s a bills fan was saying the same thing
Thats wild. He was super upset and tried to keep it professional but ya feel for that team and those fans. What a rough hand theyve had. At least they win sometimes and make the playoffs. *cough* Browns *cough* Cards.

I can see Buffalo turning into a pumpkin now and if that happens Josh will be sent for picks. Lots and lots of picks.

What's funny is if the Bills sucked in 2024 like they were supposed to, McDermott probably still has his job after this loss. This seems like a GM sacking the HC to buy himself another 1-3 years before he's gone too.

That’s exactly what it is. Every coordinator says his his number one objective is to “win a championship”. It’s not. The main goal is to keep your job at all costs.

You have to convince the owner that it is not your fault. You can’t tell your boss it’s his. There is nothing more scary than having a coach that everyone knows is pretty good, because than the spotlight shines on personnel.

Since JA came to the league in 2018, the bills have drafted only two pro bowlers. They have perpetually had less talented rosters than the year before. This GM has sucked, but yet somehow talked his way into a promotion as prez of operations.

He should thank Mac, Vrabel, and Ben Johnson for still having a job, I guarantee he leveraged their quick success to convince ownership that the Bills can do the same. They can’t. Because their GM sucks.
