Our young head coach came out forcefully to defend Sam Darnold, our franchise QB, when the media questioned Sam's starting status. His defense has gotten some unwanted media attention from Mike Florio and Chris Simms.

Florio's thing is to make a big deal out of nothing. I wish the guy would actually do some reporting and tell us things we don't know, instead of coming up with hot takes on well-known situations.

I miss Peter King and his Monday Morning QB on Sports Illustrated, which later became Football Morning in America on NBC. His takes and predictions were often wrong, but at least he gave us a lot of information based on his going to training camps and talking to players and coaches.

1,000%. He was one of few national sportswriters who gave all 32 teams the respect they deserve. And he was always willing to discuss a lot of the things that we fans like to dicuss on net that most writers avoid: weird stats and observations, uniforms, questionable officiating, history, food, music, etc.

It's not a stupid question, and McDonald made it a big deal by answering the way he did...... so I guess count me in the Salk/Florio camp here.
In defense of Macdonald, he had to calm Darnold down immediately after John Schneider's orgazm on Drew Lock's across-the-body pass 25 yards down the field. John was on the sideline, every player noticed this bromance.

That's not a camp I would ever want to be a part of. Macdonald (Not McDonald, not MacDonald) answered appropriately and was even laughing a bit when doing so because he understood the reason why it was asked. He literally says, I get why you have to ask that question. His answer is on point, he doesn't want any player being so tight in practice because they are afraid to lose job over one or two mistakes. That's the right answer, and one that sends a message not just to Darnold, but to the whole team. Macdonald is making a point, and wasn't upset with the question itself.

It's like some people didn't even listen to the whole interview and just saw a clip or this reaction above.

No, it was a stupid question. A couple picks in a practice in early June, no pads, nothing? Typical Salk stirring crap up.
He got owned, and I hope it happens again.

As Mr. Florio pointed out: 2012, folks. I don't think it's going to happen like this this year, but it has happened before, and asking the question is Salk's job. He gave him very wide berth: "Is there any scenario....." and Macdonald said it was a stupid question which is why we're talking about it now. If coach had been able to deflect with a bit of nuance it's a non-issue.

INTs in OTA by Darnold? Nothing burger after McDonald's expertly defused it.
INTs in OTA by Geno? Now that was serious when Chip Kelly and Pete Carroll failed to defend.

I suggest you watch the actual clip. He says, verbatim, "I respect that you have to ask it, but it's just a crazy question. Sam Darnold is our quarterback."

He didn't call it stupid, he wasn't flippant, he took the question in stride and explained his reasoning behind the answer.

Stop playing into the media's bullshit, especially Florio and Salk which are two of the worst when it comes to clickbait.

If you want to make your whole case on the difference between 'crazy' and 'stupid', then I guess you win.

And everyone misses Salk's preface - "I hate having to ask this..."

It's a topic among the fans. Heck, it's a poll question on these very forums. Macdonald acknowledged he had to ask. If any national media were to interview MM or JS it'll be a question.

It's not a dumb or crazy question - it's a question that we've all been asking at some level.

Peter King's MMQB was the pinnacle of internet football media for me. He was thorough, had inside info, was fairly balanced, came across as a fan, etc. in an era before we got inundated with content (articles, videos, bloggers, etc.) That piece helped make Monday mornings bearable.

Before I get mobbed, let me state that I hope Darnold does well.

The question was a bit too direct imo….its crazy to think he’d lose the starting job based on OTAs.

But, at some point, Darnold losing the starting job is a definite possibility.

Yes, he had an amazing year last year. Why did MN let him go? Why are they going with a guy that’s never played a down in the NFL…who is coming off an injury?

It’s too soon to forget that Darnold has been a career backup for the most part.

Again…I hope he does well. I truly do. But, I won’t be shocked if he doesn’t.
