part of a series on how you could try to use different strategies against different players at the top of their position, and this one is on Earl Thomas. If Kearly, Scottie, or any of our other analytically minded brethren of the 12th man would care to...I think it would be interesting for you guys to break down in your own view how successful you think any of the methods discussed in the article would be and/or to give reasons why they would succeed or fail.

Enjoying a life sentence in the Clink.
The basic..(and I mean BASIC) ideas on how to defeat ET are

Pump Seam..."Dino" double post and Double Smash Seam...

And then a diatribe on how you should line your tall receiver up on him in the redzone instead of challenging Chancellor..

Personally ,would rather see ET shadowing and chancellor in a deep "knock out zone" every damn day (in the redzone)...

You don't really attack a free safety like Earl. There are teams that will avoid them or try to take them out of a play, but I don't really consider it attacking like one would attack a DT or MLB with traps or double teams.

Earl's strengths are in his speed and play recognition. It's his ability to cover so much ground, almost sideline to sideline, that allows our corners to play as physical as they do. His weakness is in his tackling. I've seen him wiff against guys like Jay Cutler. But he plays next to a very good tackler in Cam Chancellor. They're a very complimentary pair of safeties.

I don't have insider.

I have to assume the article is all about moving Earl to attack his area, not attacking his specific weaknesses as a player.

Scottemojo,

too short put the exact routes they brought up to use to maybe get him out of position, they also mentioned targeting the endzone by getting him mismatched with a tight end.

I have insider and it was a really good read .

Basically the guy just talks about routes that can MAYBE beat Earl.

He agrees that Earl Is an unbelievable talent.

One problem for opponents is that our back 4 are all pretty good. If you 'attack' one of them, you're likely to be stepping into the wheelhouse of one of the others. Running specific routes to avoid ET is fine, but you're likely to get killed with a vicious hit from Kam for your trouble.

OK, let's run routes that don't get so close to them......Whoops, we have some of the best corners in the league, too.

Not a lot of holes back there.

;)
