The Cowboys acquired Milton and a 2025 seventh-round pick from the New England Patriots for a fifth-round pick, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

That fifth rounder is a compensatory pick too.

Not only is that less than we traded for Sam Howell, it's less than the Cowboys traded for Trey Lance last year.

We didn't lose any picks for Sam Howell. We just gave up slotting.
I didn't claim we did lose picks.

Our trade was:
#78 (3rd round)
#152 (5th round)

for

Howell
#102 (4th round)
#179 (6th round)

Basically, we traded out of two rounds for him, 24 spots from the third to the fourth, and 27 spots from the fifth to the sixth. That's definitely more than what the Cowboys are giving up in this trade, where they technically are also not "losing" picks. Seems like semantics anyway. Picks are being traded, they're just not losing net picks.

And Howell has more experience and is younger than Joe Milton. Not at the time of the trade. Right now. Howell is younger than Milton. He's also younger than Trey Lance.

I've thought for a little bit now that he's pretty overhyped and I thought people were reading too much into that good game he had against the Bills backups late in the season, but damn, I certainly thought he'd go for more than THAT.

Milton is still a complete unknown. He shined in a very small sample size. Gives people hope whereas a lot of fans have made up their mind on Howell based on an entire season. I guess I am in that camp myself. But we're talking backup QB's here, not huge deal either way.
