Honestly, I thought this said more about their frustration with McQuistan at tackle. They are getting desperate to get better protection out of the tackle position. McQuistan is a better guard than Tackle by far. I was more inclined to believe that Pete or Tom wanted to see what we could do by getting Bailey in there and putting McQuistan back at his better position. In theory, if McQuistan is better than Carpenter (which I believe he is) and Bailey can be close to as good as McQuistan at Tackle then in theory we should get improved line play.
I just wish Okung would get and stay healthy. We are so much better with him out there.
i would have to respectfully disagree that Mcquistan is better than carpenter at this point. maybe a tired carp , but not a fresh carp. I think when okung gets back carp should start and Mcquistan can spell him a couple series per game to keep him fresh.

At this point, I don't think McQuistan is 'better' overall at Guard that Carp. My bet is they wanted to try Bailey at LT, but Bailey is very green, so they wanted someone with more experience in this system than Carpenter playing next to him.
I have rooted for (and still root for) Carpenter to breakout and become a successful Offensive Lineman. The truth of the matter though, is that even with Okung out there, it was McQuistan starting at one guard position and Sweezy starting at the other, with Carpenter coming in to spell them. That tells me that the coaches believe that overall, McQuistan is the better guard.
Now, personally, I think as far as pure run blocking goes, it's Carpenter by a mile, but pass blocking and reading blitzers etc. is a major part of playing offensive line. It's a weakness that Carpenter has, and is likely what is keeping him from being the starting guard I thought he could be after failing at Right Tackle.
