In your own opinion how far off are we from a title run?

Yeah, I expected more. Not only are the sack numbers way below what they should be, they just don't seem to be getting nearly enough pressure on the QB. That needs to improve and soon.

We're a good secondary away from being legit Super Bowl contenders. We have all the talent in the world, but our secondary is buns. I like Shaq and McDougald a lot. But Flowers is still developing, and Thompson... well the jury is still out on him.

On one hand I have always thought that 2020 was the year, with the convergence of substantial draft capital, cap space and young pieces being further seasoned (Dissly, DK, Carson, Poona, Quill etc) . But, I'm also not willing to count out the 2019 version of Russell Wilson in what amounts to a 3-4 game tournament.

Who bet Foles would win one or Steelers would win after almost missing the playoffs, Giants ruining Patriots undefeated season. It happens and nobody can explain it its just part of sports that makes it what it is.

The 2005 Steelers gave up just over 16 points per game. The Eagles gave up over 18. The 2007 Giants gave up almost 22. The Seahawks are giving up over 25. Yes, I realize that three of those touchdowns in the last couple weeks are not the defense's fault, but this defense is average at best right now. And you can get lucky or the offense might do enough to overcome, but the idea that you can make a good run at a Super Bowl win without a good defense is pretty hard to get along with.

If they can't get a significant improvement on defense they're not going to be very viable. Especially with how hard it is to get wins in this division with the 49ers playing well and the Rams still hanging around.

To be fair comparing scoring to 10-15 years ago is silly. It is such a different game.

That said I agree the Hawks need a better defense to truly compete

No it's settled, Thompson is trash. He has fallen to a 39 on PFF so not only does he suck to my eyes. People who grade this stuff living see it too

It can happen any year we have Pete and a QB like Wilson. Any good team can get hot and lucky to go on a run at the end of the year.

Couldn't disagree more. No one knows more than us that Championship teams are built, not teams that get hot or lucky at the end of the year.

Sure once in a while someone like Nick Foles jumps up and plays out of his mind to help a team win a SB, but that's not paying attention to the fact that the Eagles had a GREAT defense and talent all over their roster already.

Championship teams are built over a 3-4 cycle of making the right organizational decisions and drafting/acquiring players.

We did that from 2010-2013, and haven't been as successful since. So how far away are we? Idk, our defense needs to get more talent, physical and dynamic. So however long that takes. Unfortunately it might take a 6-9 season like 2009 so we can finally get some serious draft capital at the top of the draft, and not just keep drafting mediocre players at the bottom half of rounds.

Umm other then Thomas that how we built or Championship team oh and Okung whom we have a better replacement for right now.

It's all about the defensive line. We have two starters there.

That's closer to what people keep mistakenly calling the secondary - largely awful. Clowney and Reed are solid but being dragged down by the lack of talent around them. Woods, Ford, and Q-Jeff are nice rotational pieces good for a hustle now and then a la McDonald/McDaniel 2013. That's where it ends. Everyone else - Ansah, Collier, Green, and Jackson - is a non-factor so far. And it doesn't help that our veteran LB's can't blitz like they used to.

The Rams cheated their way to 8 wins every year under Jeff Fisher because they spent their best resources on ridiculous DL talent. That's why we hated playing them even though we knew Fisher was crap. It illustrates the influence of the DL on a team.

Pretty much.

The beauty of the NFL is you CAN improve drastically over one off season.........but that ship's sailed on us on addressing all these needs for 2019 for the most part.

Doesn't mean we still can't be successful, as our 5-2 record indicates. But IMO it does mean our hopes of building the next great defense to truly put the Hawks into the same serious SB contender coming out of the NFC is not going to happen.

Just not there yet roster wise, especially on special teams and the defensive side of the ball.

I don't necessarily think the best we can do is one and done in The Playoffs. Nor do I think that should be the goal. I know The Playoffs are a huge ego boost, but frankly one-and-done just puts you in a worse draft position.

There's precedent for going further as seen with 9ers in 2013. The 49ers advanced that far b/c of a QB no one had figured out yet plus Phil Dawson's leg. And we all remember what happened with the Broncs who were supposedly best in offense.

Offensive line needs to get more consistent and Ifedi needs to be a backup. Defense needs more interior pass rush from the tackle position. Ansah needs to play to his ability and contract. Safeties need much improvement in not allowing receivers behind them as well as open field tackling (starting the rookie is a step in the right direction). Special teams kick coverage needs major improvement. Blocking to protect the punter must be improved as he is feeling rushed to get the ball away and it shows in his production. Rookies need to mature quickly. Team must maintain a positive net differential in turnovers. Penalties at critical junctures must be reduced.

If all of the above happen, Seattle can go on a title run with the players currently on the roster.
