A future starting QB is already on the roster. Sam Howell is a year younger than Bo Nix. No sense in wasting a pick on a potential possible player that may or may not pan out at a position where the top guy is barely in his mid thirties and the backup has a year of starting experience on a cheap contract. Especially when there are more glaring needs elsewhere. Sure, go ahead and use a high draft pick for a position that is already strong while continuing to ignore the positions that keep the QB upright and healthy.

This is so correct. We have needs on the defense (where our HC is going to want to use his resources), and needs on the offensive line. Do not mortgage the farm when we have a very good starter with a solid developmental/backup QB waiting in the wings. Draft some kid with potential in the 4th or 5th round and let him sit and learn.

Well, then let him EARN a new contract. He just signed one. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'd like to see a player actually sign a contract and honor it. At least for a season or two. IF he kills it all year, THEN give him a big deal. It's not like he's making chump change.

No blowback, but a different perspective. I think he signed the team friendly, "show us what you got" deal with the expectation that, if he shows that he is the guy, then he would be paid accordingly. JS & MM would be insane to let him walk, unless he asks for a Mahomes/Prescott money. A 4-year $200m extension, $60m signing bonus, back loaded gets Geno more $$ than he ever imagined and allows the team to retain key players and build the OL.

He's playing really well right now. I hope he continues this throughout the season. In 2022, he got off to a hot start but his play dropped in the 2nd half of the season.

I would say, let Geno walk, and if he wants to stay in Seattle, he will sign a Tom Brady type deal. Nice and cap friendly. No more than 15 million a year. If not, draft a QB or pick one up in free agency. Still have a capable back up, if he walks.

If Geno keeps producing at this level, you'd have to be the dumbest GM in the league not to extend him. His cap hit next season is 38.5M. He'll still only be 34/35. Give him the Kirk Cousins deal, 45M/Year for four years, with the first two guaranteed. Barring injury, there is very little risk of a quarterback with his skill set falling off a cliff. This isn't a weak-armed Matt Ryan, whose age suddenly meant he couldn't complete his throws. Geno's not going to slow down in the next two to three seasons.

If the Seahawks don't sign him, no other team will "sign him for much cheaper." I don't even know what to say about 15 million a year. I don't know what you do for a living or what you make, but 15 million a year for a starting caliber QB would be like you making minimum wage. He would make more than that if the Chiefs signed him to be Mahomes backup! When he gets a new contract, it will most likely be north of 50 million. Thats just reality in the 21st century NFL.

take, I never wanted to extend Me3 the first time after that 2nd SB loss
I knew it was over once we paid him major dough, Geno isn't him though
and maybe if he doesn't want 4-5 years, I'd be for it.

Well, damn. Everything I've said in this thread was under the assumption that he was going to be a free agent after this season because the initial post gave me that impression.

Why the hell does anyone care then? Did the NFL institute a transfer portal?

The NFL does have a transfer portal, it's called "I refuse to play under my current contract." and if you don't agree then it's "I demand a trade!".

I don't think Geno is that type of player but if he feels disrespected enough, real or perceived, he may go there. I doubt it happens in season but it could off season.

The main thing holding Geno back from making Trevor Lawrence bank is his age, but I could see him getting a Kirk Cousins type contract.

No argument there. I think it would be really hard to not get happy feet when huge guys have been getting by your line.
But the reality is that it does get to Geno and he starts bailing when the pressure isn't even there at times and he does play panicked when things start breaking down.
I will say in the second half of the lions game he broke those tendencies a bit.

Ill preface this buy saying I like Geno - he is a good fit for us right now and I can't point to another QB we could actually go get that would be better in our current form.

BUT - I agree that once someone gets hands on Geno - or really collapses the pocket to where he cannot wind up and throw - he is likely to do almost anything with the ball, mostly not good things.

If he can limit those particular reactions he would be perfect for us. Those reactions scare me. Don't take a 20-yard sack - don't throw a wild ass pass that gets picked - or almost picked. Take the short sack, throw the ball away. JUST DO IT!

What's the panic about? Geno who 34 next Thursday is under contract next season. To extend him is a risky because he'll be 36 . The only QBs starting at that age is Rodgers,Stafford, Cousins and if you count Dalton that makes 4 out of 32 QBs, so definitely not the norm and will these QBs regress or be injured prone this season? Have to wait and see. Is it fair to say their best days are behind them? I think so. Makes more sense to wait until the off season and then review the options.

Yep, I am simultaneously calling him the best QB in the NFL right now and someone that we need to let walk if he demands much in his next contract. Both are true.

At his age, it's too much of a risk. The wheels could stiffen up at any time. He's playing great right now, but the season's only a quarter over and Grubb's system has yet to be adapted to. What are we hoping a new contract will get us - maybe one Super Bowl with him? (It isn't happening this year.)

The "miles" is hard to measure, people age at different rate, don't we? Most QB play started go south around 36? With exceptions like Brady who played into 40s or Russ, he ain't the same post 32?

Using 36 as a gauge, a 2-3 year extension could work?
