I think Jeremy Lane started over Tharold for one reason

Speed, pure, unadulterated speed. Because he, and John Brown have plenty of it and Pete didn't want us getting beat deep.

Both Browns have been making DBs look silly this year but John, IMHO, is the scary one. His speed and ability were obvious coming out of Pittsburgh State, buy still it was surprising to see him go in the third round. According to NFL dot com, "Led all receivers at the combine with a 2.46 second 20 yard split."

He was very active in college to, returning punts and kickoffs and was a team captain. Props to AZ for picking this guy as he has won at least one game for them, and in my humble opinion, is a threat to take it to the house on any play. That is unless he's being covered by someone just as fast (4.3 - 40).

Both of them (Brown and Lane) have a good combo of speed AND quickness. I think Simon might have been able to hang with Brown, speed-wise, but Lane's also got the quickness of a cat.

Good point. My wishful thinking saysSimon in improving in that area, but when your opposition's offense depends on penalties to sustain drives, it's a prudent consideration.

I think there are a few reasons. Simon dislocated a finger last week. Lane has way more experience in the slot than Simon. And they must have liked Maxwell's matchup outside.

The Simon/Maxwell combo in nickel has always been about match-ups. They used it against SF. Why? SF has nothing but slow possession receivers. They used it against PHI. Why? Because 6'3" Jordan Matthews plays almost all of his snaps out of the slot.

Against teams with more conventional slot receivers (quick guys like Brown, Welker), you can expect to see Lane get the call in nickel packages.
