Yes, I know, 107 yard return. I don't care. First, I don't think he wins the job, and second, I don't think he will be that good at it consistently.
I get the feeling the staff wants Christine Michael to win the KR job, but I think he has a fumbling problem, and the last place I want a fumbler is returning kicks.
My pick for the job? Will Blackmon. I like his size and speed, and he has some wiggle for a bigger guy. I trust his years of NFL experience, and I like having an extra DB on the gameday roster.
Kind of agree, kind of don't.
#1: Kearse didn't show much lateral movement on that return. He pretty much ran straight up the field. I'm pretty sure Brandon Browner could have taken that kick 107 yards. However, that doesn't mean that Kearse is incapable of making lateral moves, he just didn't have to because he had a huge lane in a straight line ahead of him.
What it did tell us is that Kearse's 4.43 forty time at the combine (correction: pro-day) looks pretty legit. I didn't not expect him to look quite that explosive, either. Michael is faster on the field than he is in track shorts, but I doubt he'd be any faster than Kearse (though his agility, explosiveness, and balance/resilience are obviously very special). Unfortunately, we have very little data on either returner, because Seattle's defense has only surrendered 20 points in two games.
Also, I really liked the stiff arm he used to beat the kicker. People forget, but Kearse is a tall WR, 6'2" and he's got some decent strength. A sample size of one isn't enough to judge either way, and this was a flawed sample, but there were some things to like about Kearse in a KR role from that one play.
#2: Michael did have a fumble problem at college, but didn't have a fumble problem in the Chargers game. I haven't heard of him being plagued by fumbles in practices. I agree 110% about not wanting a fumble prone player on KR though, because it seems like a disproportionate number of fumbles happen on KRs so ball security is of high importance.
#3: I can't really see us keeping a 7th DB just for KR, though I agree that Blackmon has looked solid in all phases. I wonder if Turbin can return kicks? He has speed and his running ability has some similar traits to Leon Washington.
