5-techs: QJefferson, Shelby Harris, Collier, Maybe Poona?
Nose Tackles: Mone, Woods, Poona?
I was thinking the starters would be in retrospect to the Red Bryant days:
Jefferson, Ford, Woods
Jefferson and Woods got the most length at 6-4, 80+ Inch wing spans. Guys that you’d want to stand their ground in the run game but also disrupt passing lanes.
Jefferson isn’t a carbon copy of Bryant and that’s okay because he’s good enough to still hold his edge although might not force double teams but provides much better pass-rush and penetration than Bryant.
Woods and Ford, respectively, are pretty damn comparable to what we had in the lengthy, big-bodied Alan Branch/Tony McDaniel and the shorter, stouter Mebane. Both Ford and Mebane share similarities as guys who provide sneaky penetration and do well in pursuit.
Harris is good enough to start but he’s the best pass-rusher in the DLine group. I see him filling a similar role to Michael Bennett if it was 2013 as an inside/outside pass-rusher that can come in to spell Jefferson or Woods in the base.
Speaking of 2013: Although, I suspect Alton Robinson will back-up Darrell Taylor, he doesn’t necessarily fit as he might too undersized to be a big end and not agile enough (Nwosu possesses a nifty probably sub-elite or elite 7.05 3-Cone) to fill a big LBer role as a primary. Robinson could fill a similar situational pass-rush role Cliff Avril had in 2013 which is fitting as Avril is one of his mentors. And he gives you a player that can base DE in a situational 4-3 if needed.
Mone likely fits as a backup to Ford and Woods as well as a key contributor in Jumbo packages.
Collier is tricky to project maybe he can be the Clinton McDonald of the group. Collier isn’t as quick, strong, or explosive but they both have similar ht/wt comps coming out Collier is more longer. I’m hoping guys like Jefferson and especially Harris can help Collier (and fans) realize what he could become as a player and just put those expectations of what he needs to be as 1st rounder behind him and just be a dependable rotational player that could grow into a starter someday.
Note: as I said in other threads I’m not implying the Seahawks are running a re-tread of the 2011-2013 defenses, I just think the Run Defense will take a similar approach to the Red Bryant 5tech days but the Passing Defense will be more creative and adaptive to modern offenses.
