I choose to think about D.K's situation like this:

1) If you cut D.K, you are only going to save $10m for next year's cap. Not really an incentive in my opinion -- especially since you have to either draft his replacement or sign his replacement. Chances are, neither options will actually replace D.K.

2) If you extend D.K, you can actually have a manageable cap hit for 2024 and 2025. You can structure all sorts of ways but you can open up at least $15m if his cap hit is in the teens in the first year. You give yourself easy outs on the back end of his contract.

3) So I choose to lower his cap hit for 2025 and keep his production. This actually makes the team better. You can open money to sign others and you keep a good WR already. D.K just turned 27 years old in Dec. He's still freaking young and will be on his third contract. Doing this will allow you just need to add another WR as opposed to finding multiple WRs.

His worth to other teams is probably more than he is worth to Seattle at this point. It probably wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world to trade him before the season starts. Don’t get me wrong. I love DK, but I don’t think Seattle uses him right and I think a team that needs a strong offensive player to put them over the edge will pay a decent amount for him.

THIS is the type of thing that drives me insane. He had ONE personal foul called on him THE ENTIRE SEASON.
ONE.

That ONE became basically he's a team cancer, he's killing the team, he sucks, he cost us games blah blah blah blah.
A guy who plays that aggressive had all of 5 TOTAL PENALTIES the entire season? And that tips the scales? :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
It’s just bias.

Now what I would knock him for is the game breaking fumbles. He’s got to secure the ball better.

If MM wants to be a run oriented offense, it doesn't make a lot of sense to pay so much to your aging QB and WR who is probably at his peak trade value. The money saved would go a long ways toward shaping a big, bruising OL. JSN will be a great #1 WR. Lockett is not worth his cap hit. Spend an early pick on one of the top TE's and a replacement for DK. There would still be money saved to add depth to OL or spend on defensive weaknesses.
The only opinions that matter are MM and JS. I wouldn't be surprised if their thought was that they don't want to try to develop a QB with a head case like DK on the team.
I also say look at the success the top teams have had with an average WR group and a strong OL. Ravens, Chiefs, Lions, Bills don't have a guy like DK, but they do have great OL's. The best WR on those 4 teams (not counting TE's) is Amon Ra and he's more JSN type.
Obviously they also have a few of the top QB's in the league. But I think they prove that having an average group of receivers can be offset by a very good OL.
Is there a team that has finished the season near the top that had a bad OL with that one physically imposing WR? I can't think of one off the top of my head.

I’d love to see DK under the auspices of a new OC next year. Now if he is utilized in a similar way that he was this year, he probably doesn’t warrant the investment.

What DK really needs is an offensive line that can protect long enough to allow him to create spacing on longer developing routes.

I hope he stays around. Replicating a guy who can chase down Budda Baker after a 20 yard head start, smoke the entire Dallas secondary and leave them in the dust in seconds, and jump higher than almost every DB in the league is a tall task indeed.

A new dawn coming with Sam Howell and JSN; no Geno and no DK.

According to ESPN's offseason predictions, the Seahawks will no longer have Metcalf's services beyond this season. JSN and, maybe, Lockett will have to find their own way. Instead, Metcalf will be dressed in a Los Angeles Chargers uniform next season and help head coach Jim Harbaugh win a lot of games.

just like all the high paid top receivers in the final 4 right now.

Now we just need to see him out jump a DB and catch it. Or maybe move him to D so he can chase down guys

The Commanders' highest-paid player is a receiver, as are the third and seventh highest paid on the Eagles. The AFC teams haven't spent a ton there, although the Chiefs are paying $20m/yr to a receiving TE.

I am not talking price even. McLaurin and AJ Brown are 15 and 17th in receiving yards. No top WRs made it. It is a dependent position and almost every other position on offense is more important.

Two fumbles in his past 44 games.
Yep, people literally MAKE STUFF UP about the guy. It's just strange AF. He does something a couple times and magically.....he does it all the time.
Look at that ONE Personal Foul penalty, ONE. Somehow, it's spun as he's been doing it all the time. He had a couple games with fumbles this year, that's it. He fixed it. Just like he fixed the Personal Foul problem.

Probably a useless take, people made their minds up long ago. Meh

ESPN used to be a dependable sports site. It sure isn’t anymore. Very little from them is well sourced or dependable. They are selling click bait these days.

i’m sure, like with every other player, the right offer for both teams could result in DK being traded, cutting him would be hugely expensive with dead money. Beyond that all the “made up, and supposed reasons“ for trading DK are just that. Players like him are rare and usually kept around. The deal would need to be very good to trade him away.

Geno being gone seems much more likely, I’d bet Locket could be restructured.

The team has many decisions to make this offseason, it will interesting to watch.

Imagine if Josh Allen had AJ Brown? I should write an article about that. Philadelphia would get good value.

I wanted the Hawks to trade DK a year ago when his value was higher.
My general assessment of him for *years* has been that he is overrated and gets hyped about his potential instead of his performance. I think 2024 was the year that his shine wore off. We probably won't get any offers that are too good to refuse, but he isn't worth his cost and he never will be as a seahawk. If DK Metcalf is ever going to reach his potential it will happen in a different jersey.
