"I made up my mind after the playoff game against the Falcons that I wasn't going anywhere," Howard said. "I've got to play next year. I put that in my mind. And everyday I worked out, I thought about not playing, and not being active. So I was like, 'I'm going to be active this year.'"

The results have been good so far for Howard. He put on 15 pounds of muscle, and at 6-foot-3 is up to 305 pounds. And he's learning a new position, as defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has Howard backing up Red Bryant at strong-side defensive end, along with competing for the starting defensive tackle job left open by the departure of Alan Branch in free agency.

"I've been watching Big Red's film everyday, and I'm trying to play like him," Howard said. "He's physical at the point of the attack, and I'm just trying to add that to my game. I've become more of student of the game."

"That's a spot we felt that he could compete at," Seattle defensive line coach Travis Jones said about Howard playing defensive end. "He's got a really strong upper body, and really strong hands. He understands how to strike and knock people back. He's made some good progress. I'm really pleased with the way he's started with the position."

I still can't believe the Hawks didn't pick up a day 1 starter with that 4th round pick. What a waste

If the coaching staff is happy, then so am I.

I kinda figured he would flash some promise with Quinn as DC.

I'm rooting for Howard to excel, and I really hope he puts it together. Knowing that you could have been the hero who collapsed the pocket on Matt Ryan has got to sting.

I'm glad that Howard is showing well so far at the 5-tech in camp, but let's be honest, part of his emergence has been due to attrition rather than him simply outplaying the competition. The first 5-tech behind Red would have been Michael Bennett but he's had to rep with the base D at the Leo spot due to the Clemons injury and the move of Irvin to Sam LB. The next 5-tech would have been Greg Scruggs, who is now likely out for the year with an Achilles. So in reality, Howard is their fourth string 5-tech.

Love the hyperbole. Where did you find it and how is it that you think it applies to the OPs thread? Because I thought there was a question about Jaye Howard and whether or not he was coming on strong. Didn't see anything about the draft mentioned.

Some people think he might do well, others, meh. Me, I don't see it. But if you want to take issue with my opinions and comments, you are more than welcome to, just wish you would add something that actually applies to a positive or negative about JH.

Quinn is a big fan of Howard and recommended the Hawks draft him. I expect he'll play his best football under Quinn's leadership.
