1. I'm not going to blame the injury situation...not entirely. That defense did not looked coached and it did not look confident. The back seven was marked by hesitation, bad fundamentals, and missed assignments all night. That isn't explained by the DL struggling. You have to line up right, have to hand things off right, have to fill your run gaps, and you have to tackle. That was on Mike.

2. That being said, this really was the perfect storm - there's a reason we were all panting over OC Ben Johnson for the job that Mike McDonald got. He's a miracle worker, his offensive line is the best in football, and the tandem of Montgomery and Gibbs is the best at their position. You couldn't ask for a worse possible matchup.

3. THE GAME WAS STILL WINNABLE. That's on Ryan Grubb. I'm sold. Screens, run packages, receivers open, HOOK-AND-LADDER PLAYS for God's sake...not just the creativity, but the execution is what's got me sold.

4. That's what drives me insane - we could have won but for DK's lack of discipline and a couple dumb ref calls. I really don't even think we were the worse team out there last night. Did anyone see how bad Detroit's defense was? And that defense was healthy. What's their excuse? Instead, we lost what could prove a crucial conference tiebreaker.

5. GENO SMITH IS THE BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE NFL. He's leading in passing yards and completions, second in completion rate amongst starting QB's, and without a star RB for a couple games - who predicted this?? But you can also see on the field that he deserves it. He's executing Grubb's system and yet creating when he needs to. And that third-down bugaboo? Wasn't a problem last night! This team needs to not waste his best season.

6. Everyone knows now why Kenneth Walker is such a big deal. He completely changes the game. We don't sniff 29 points without him last night, no disrespect to Charbonnet. Walker's cutting ability, change of direction, and pure tenacity are highlight-reel stuff. It's infuriating that we've barely seen him his first two seasons.

7. Myles Adams continues to be an utterly inconsequential signing.

8. I have to call two defensive guys out for effort and perseverance on plays - Devon Witherspoon and Dre'Mont Jones. The hustle was there for both guys, even if the production wasn't.

9. Jarran Reed is still commanding double teams, but he was also fairly ineffective outside of a sack early. Seattle needs to remain in the first-round DL market next draft.

10. Gipson doesn't belong on an NFL field. He was dogging plays even before the Goff catch.

11. Too many linebackers not staying home. They'd rush up to the line and hand-drum a rhythm on a teammate's back, then wave vaguely at Gibbs as he darted through the hole they left. Again, that's Mike. No excuses. It was a problem the whole game.

12. That long Jameson Williams TD worked because it was a good play call against our safety blitz. Can't take risks like that on defense when we're this unprepared.

13. Somewhere I shared a tweet (against my better judgment) of Matty Brown calling out DT Johnathan Hankins for strong play. Now I'm thinking it might have just been Matty being contrarian again.

14. The refs totally cost us eight points.

15. Derick Hall is still on a terrific trajectory. Being able to produce at all next to a patchwork DL is immensely comforting.

16. Can Pharoah Brown start producing something besides penalties, please? He was better than this in New England.

17. This team will be okay, I think. Mike isn't stupid, he knows what happened, and there's a lot of green defensive and recent signings back there. The offense, however, was just brilliant. Mentally tough. Executing well. Nobody's talked about the offensive line for a couple weeks now, which means Grubb is scheming around it effectively. But the offense will face a tough test against the Giants defense next week.

We get it.. you wanted Ben Johnson, didn’t get him and aren’t happy with MM.. and refuse to think injured were a large contributor to this loss .. 200

How about stating the same thing in one of the million threads that already mention 99% of what you stated.. or was did you create this on to feel special and get attention? Congrats you got it here’s a digital cake 🎂

You obviously didn't read the last line.

In fact, I'm pretty sure you didn't read past my second point. Can you dispute that the defense was tackling poorly, etc.? Or do you want to stand on emotion instead of footbal discussion?

Other guys being out doesn't excuse other defenders not being able to tackle.

"Other guys"?? You mean actually our first stringers who are first stringers for a reason versus practice squad-level players??

I'm the first to admit I am not an X's and O's savant. Hardly. However, even I know the importance of a competent defensive line to put pressure on the running game and quarterback which frees up the secondary to have a fair shot.

I have no desire to debate or argue with a fellow 12. I am just going to end by saying any human being that is conveniently undermining the reality that it is almost impossible to win an NFL game without your starting defensive line needs to reconsider their stance.

You don't have to be a guru. Bad DL play doesn't excuse a blown tackle twenty yards down the field after the catch, or in the flat, or in the bloody OFFENSIVE BACKFIELD when you've corner-blitzed and then take a bad angle and whiff. There was a lot of that yesterday.

It also doesn't excuse LB's mugging the line instead of staying home on your run fits, something Bobby Wagner talked a lot about. A lot of that, too.

Everybody needs Mike to be Dick LeBeau right now. He ain't gonna be. We aren't gonna win a Super Bowl this year and we were never going to. It's okay for there to be games like this, but I don't feel the slightest inclination to avoid placing blame where it rightfully goes. And I was amongst the ones who saw the injury report BEFORE the game and called it an L, so don't say I'm ignoring the effects of the DL situation.

Where this game DID shine, and where I was effusive in my praise, was on the offensive side. Grubb has me excited.

Too many points to respond to. However ...

I think AJ Barner is going to be a damn good TE . They could move on from Pharaoh Brown and Fant .

The guys playing on defense weren't playing as a unit , that's how you get burnt . Give Goff his credit .

I know this is unpopular but I'd figure out how to turn DK to some draft capital. Metcalf is not cerebral enough , yes he has heart but there are all kinds of WR that don't have his physical tangibles but I'd trust more in a serious situation.

I'd trade or cut Lockett . He's too small , appears to have lost a step and isn't worth the kind of money he's being paid.
Trade him for some draft pieces and deal with the cap. He's not going to be here in 2 seasons when Seattle is ready for Superbowl contention. Let him get his real estate career going . He'll be set for life if he stays in Seattle as Seahawk royalty.

And hey !!! This is me discussing ideas. I don't hate either one of these guys. You may disagree and I respect that.

Nice post, agree with a lot of it.

Geno deserves his flowers for sure. Arguably the best QB at the moment, especially with how poor the OL continues to grade out in pass protection. JS needs to reward him for sticking it out, betting on himself with a lesser contract, and playing at such a high level. Having a guy at QB to build around for 3, 4, 5 years is huge for filling out the rest of the roster. Depth is obviously still a big issue but can't be solved in a year.

Incredible what having an excellent play designer AND adjuster at OC can do for you. Even the run game is increasingly creative. Grubb will unfortunately be getting HC offers soon enough but man, what an upgrade over the Pete Carroll picks. Once the OL gets sorted a bit, I expect to see a lot more home run chances that he loved taking at UW.

The studs out on the DL were certainly missed, especially as Detroit started the game looking to establish the run (please get healthy Williams), but the backend had a poor game. Jenkins seemed to be the only one making some positive plays. Ben Johnson also routinely beat MM's blitzes, so just an overall poor game on that side of the ball. They hopefully get some easier sledding against the Giants next week.

Hall and Mafe's development is amazing so far. I think they still need to find their Roquan in the middle but definitely have some stellar pieces to build around so far.

I can't agree more with #1, #3, and #5.

On #1: I know people bemoan PFF, but the injury replacements played pretty well. Derrick Hall continues to look like a stud, and quite honestly, he's probably the starter going forward over Uchenna. Tyrice Knight, Myles Adams, and Bowser also played decent in relief.

According to PFF and RDBSM, the issues had more to do with the backend. The Lions basically put Dodson in a blender all game, and our pass defense in the middle was atrocious. Some people will point to a lack of pressure, but the pressure rates were good. Goff just got the ball out quickly. He had 4 air yards per pass (reasonably low), which, after the catch, ended up being 16 yards per completion. That's absurd. Having everyone healthy may have mitigated the problem, but there is still a problem to resolve.

On #3 and #5: The offense deserves a ton of credit. Unlike Goff, Geno had to earn everything. Nearly every throw was high-difficulty, stepping into a rapidly collapsing pocket and throwing darts. Grubb called a masterful game, too. He's unlocked Metcalf, and we're finally seeing a player worth his contract. If Walker can stay healthy, this is a championship-caliber unit. No question.

I can't fathom being anything but stoked about Coach Mike and the future of this team.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I woke up today MORE confident in this team than I was before that game.
That was the loss we needed at this early point - the game after next will tell because Daniel jones has ptsd from hymen field last year
