Yep. Physical talent, strong arm, stats etc. None of that means squat if you don't get it done in the end.
And Geno Smith has been in the league 12 years now. How about the consistent costly mistakes in the red zone that a 12 year vet shouldn't be making?DK has been in the league 6 years. If he's taking plays off and running horrible routes that cause picks at this point in his career, I'm not sure any QB or coach can change that.
Sure, but I give much more leeway to QBs who have to make split second reads with 300lb freaks trying to take their head off. There's no excuse for a veteran WR half assing routes like DK does, especially a timing route. And Geno Smith has been in the league 12 years now. “He's proven in the right system, with the right people around him, that he can be exceptional,” Schlereth said. “And I would lean more toward that than going out there and (acquiring) some guy that you think is going to all of a sudden have that Sam Darnold-type ascension."
A quote from Schlereth on Geno from the last Wyman and Bob.
He flat says its easy to look at the failure of this offense and point to Geno as being a problem, but that its not that simple. And he is 100% right.
Mac has said it in different ways by saying many of Geno's errors are team errors. And when asked a out the last INT against Minny, in not trying to call out the REAL issue, kinda did when he said:
(paraphrasing) - i'm not going to get into it ... whether its the route that was run or the play design...'
Geno HAS made mistakes but he has made them in a system that even the HC has called into question.
Fix the system and see how the pieces perform before you let walk a QB who has shown that when he is handed a competent plan and functional, complimentary pieces around him, he (as Schlereth said) is exceptional.
And this is an area that neither analyst mentions. If you want to break down the cause of the INTs that's fine, but the fact remains that, without the drops from opposing players on very catchable balls from Geno, his INTs could have been much worse.I like Schlereth, but when exactly has Geno been exceptional? For a half a season in 2022 in his entire 12 year career. What Schlereth doesn't get into is the constant brain farts Geno has that he seems to never be able to shake.
What Schlereth and a bunch of Geno supporters here are saying is that Geno can be good,,,,,if everything else is perfect. Good Oline, good running game, receivers running perfect routes, and an awesome OC. Yeah that might get it done for him. It should because that would get it done for any NFL caliber QB. The problem is that perfection only lives in a fantasy land.
Also the excuses for his cumilation of interceptions needs to stop. The fact is he's thrown a crap load of them for whatever reason and he should have a lot more.
He could EASILY have 25 picks this year. And this is an area that neither analyst mentions. If you want to break down the cause of the INTs that's fine, but the fact remains that, without the drops from opposing players on very catchable balls from Geno, his INTs could have been much worse.

He's nowhere near the pro bowl this year. He's a "pro-bowl" QB.
Is he?
There are 22 starters on this team plus coaches, you can't put the success/failure of the team entirely on his shoulders.Yep. Physical talent, strong arm, stats etc. None of that means squat if you don't get it done in the end.
He's had a bad year with picks for sure at 17/15. Last year he was 20/9 and the year before that he was 30/11. He hasn't been a pick machine prior to this season. Even the best QBs can have years where they throw more picks, Josh Allen was 29/18 last year.Has he proven it though? He's a turnover machine.
But he lead the league in turnover worthy throws either last year or the year before. I think the law of averages just snuck up on him. He had a lot of luck the year he lead the league and probably a bit of bad luck this year with a high percentage of them being picked off. He has to make more big plays though and 20 touchdowns last year and 17 this year just isn't very good. There are 22 starters on this team plus coaches, you can't put the success/failure of the team entirely on his shoulders.

I never said he was the only reason they lost. Not once. There are 22 starters on this team plus coaches, you can't put the success/failure of the team entirely on his shoulders.
