Two approaches to Geno's evaluations:

1. He played with great weapons, so his ranking was elevated, he isn't as good as his PFF grades.
2. He played with a bottom-ranked OL, so he is better than his PFF grades.

Both are true :)

Just a side observation that a few fans keep in mind .......

PFF QB grades are mostly driven by definitive NFL play outcomes.

Whereas, PFF OL grades are defined by PFF own scorers subjectively recording ............. win - loss - draw opinions.

Subjective grading varies to some degree among teams. Teams do their own internal team specific OL grading.

If this conversation were had in a blind situation, without knowledge of player names, team, coach, and you were told that a QB finished 16th (at worst), with a crap o line, terrible rb support and questionable coordinator calling plays (so bad he was let go) but that in the upcoming season, each of those areas of deficiency was likely going to be improved (and maybe significantly), would it make more sense that that QB would be better than 16th with said improvements, or worse?

I dont get it.

I questioned Waldron when he was hired essentially based on Mcvay calling all the plays and Waldron had zero play calling experiences in NFL.

I will make that Waldron opinion after this season when he isn't working under Pete. Just to eliminate the so call Pete influences or Pete micromanagement, if that was even a factor.

Here's the list:

Honestly looks fair to me. There's really nobody above him that I think should clearly be below, and nobody below I think should clearly be above.
While I agree with that I think the tier 4 excluding Williams (I would not rank him that high without a single NFL snap) are close enough that you could say the same thing if Geno was 11th.
Of tier 4, I would put Tua, Goff, Purdy and possibly Cousins ahead of Geno (putting Geno 14th or15th)

At best I could put Smith 3 places higher on the PFF list. I could also put him 2 places lower. 15-20 is where he is. However, there are a lot of QBs below him who are younger, cheaper, and who have a lot more upside. If contract value and upside are factored in he could either be top 12 or not in the top 25 depending on your exact criteria.

Good thing no other QBs have any of those issues either, Just Geno.

Glad you pointee that out. Becsuse thevfact is, no qb in the league who had remotely similar problems finished as high as he did.

None.

Just Geno.

And like i said. If it were any other qb, we were talking about, there would be little debate as to ehether hed play better with better performance around him. Thats just simple logic - that of if he did more than any other qb in the league with so little from the line, rb's and OC, that he'd certainly do better if thise areas improved. If it was any other qb, of course that woukd be true.

But not with Geno.

Numerical rankings are always going to be misleading. You could randomize everyone from 6 to 20 and make a reasonable argument for wherever each player lands. The better evaluation is performative, i.e., is this guy good enough to win you games? Geno has proven he can. That's all that matters. Where he ranks, relative to his peers on an arbitrary list, does not.

A high rate of throwing the ball right into the chest of defenders tends to lower your ranking of an NFL starting QB. I like Geno, but he needs to stop doing that.
While I also prefer that Geno keep the picks down he's actually not that bad comparatively. Most of the top 10 QBs have double digit picks each season, Geno had 9 last year and 11 the year before.

He just needs to stop throwing the ball right to defenders. Not sure we've ever seen a guy get luckier with dropped picks than he did last season.

3....2.....1.........

We get it. Nobody but Geno had so much going against them and that he should be the second coming of Joe Montana with the suppossed improvements.

What happens a year or two down the line when these improvements still equate to zero post season wins?

Looks like the majority thinks 10-15 is accurate which I agree. He has the potential to be Top 10 for sure, but his mean average right now would fall into the 10-15, IMO.
