Do You Think Pete, Bevell & Co. Are Holding Out On Plays?

For some reason it seems like we've been running that "simple" offense. I have a feeling Pete & Bevell are hiding out on some plays for use later into the season and not let teams figure us out. What do you guys think?

Itd be nice to imagine that but i kind of doubt it. If thats the case, its the second half of the season now. Open up the damn O.

Yes, I think he's trying to simplify things because we haven't been hitting on all cylinders and that's a good way to get back to fundamentals.

Get the tackles back, some decent pass pro and things will open up. For now, stick to the base plays and run over the guy in front of you!

I think the situation with our offensive line has forced our hand on what plays we choose on offense. Hopefully when Okung and Giacomini are back, things will be at least a wee bit different.

It's been done before. Greg Roman claimed as much last year with the 49ers (and showed that he wasn't lying with what was called in the playoffs). I can believe it. Especially when you consider that Harvin isn't there yet. That alone already guarantees that the Hawks aren't calling all the plays they will in the playoffs, but I think it being more than that is a possibility.

This makes the most sense to me.

I think they are limited in what they can do because the O-line is in a catastrophic state. If anything, they've had to be increasingly more inventive in some ways to get any sort of offense going with zero pass protection. They've been working in a ton of short stuff that wasn't that common in 2011 or 2012. Some of the crazier trick plays we've seen in the past are just too dangerous right now with our protection issues.

They're not holding out. It's more of the fact that with the terrible line play and ineffective WR's that can't get any separation, our playbook is limited for Russell right now.

So it's not like Bevell can open up the seven step drop pass play book or double hitch deep slants and go routes. Thus more plain vanilla calls.

Ditto on what everyone else has said with a beat up patchwork O line you're limited and you gameplan according to the defensive scheme the best you can. That being said, Pete did say that intercepted play near the goal line that they'd been waiting to get that play put into a game so they've certainly got a number of plays for certain scenarios they'll keep hidden for the right moment.

A lot of people are thinking Harvin will come in and solve our issues on offense but I don't see it. We just haven't had luck with high-profile, free agent receivers, so my expectations are low until I see him play a full game.

A lot of plays have not had the time needed to develop since Russell is running for his life.

So they have had to dial back the simplicity of the plays by necessity, not because they want to hold anything back.

They are just trying to get plays off and get the ball to the receivers. Hard to do much creative like we saw last season when there is no time for Russ in the pocket.

You mean when he wasn't calling real plays against the Seahawks?

I'm actually liking that they are getting back to basics. Run, run, run, simple pass plays with shorter routes. When that is working, then mix those longer routes and more complex route trees into the playcalling.

That Niner fan posting here knows what I'm talking about because Greg Roman had to do the same thing this year and the Niners haven't lost since then.

wins are too hard and losses too costly to hold things back. They probably have some stuff for harvin when he's back but there is just no way that they are holding back their playbook to be a 'surprise' later.

NFL teams are too good, even the bad ones, to purposefully limit and cripple your chances.

this thread seems to pop up about once a week lately.

It would be a stupid tactic. Almost losing games just to "unleash" the offense later? nah, just not the case. The offensive struggles have been very real.

Not trying to be rude at all but I'm tired of people saying that Harvin won't help the offense. He is a top 5 talent in the nfl and maybe the best playmaking offensive weapon in football. You can't compare him to Branch and TJ. The talent gap between them and Harvin is astronomical. Teams have to completely change the way they gameplan for our offense with him in the mix. He will open things up for Lynch as well. Go look at his stats last year before getting hurt. He was the frontrunner for league MVP. He is a special talent and he will help the offense. I don't think he puts up similar stats to last year but his presence will help the offense. Teams can't just press cover and send everyone because Harvin would take a quick slant to the house.

Back to the original topic....I will agree with others and say our line limits what we can do. So we will do much more but only when people get healthy and Wilson has some extra time AND someone who can create space=creativity from Bevell

He won't solve all the problems (what exactly are they again outside of the OLine?) But he is one of the most talented players in the league with the ball in his hand.

There are plays the Hawks aren't able to run because of the OLine and later it might look like they were holding stuff back, especially when the combo of Harvin and the line is in play.
