You could have paid Smith about the same as Lawrence and gotten a way better player.
One thing most of you fail to even consider, maybe Smith was their first choice and he wasn't interested. Not saying that's the case but it happens, you just rarely hear about it.

DTiempo81:
Lawrence is a run stopper, not sure where you are getting edge rusher from. He can rush the passer but that has not been his primary responsibility.
They are both listed as Edge Defenders. Can he rush the passer?? Not as well. Why are they paying Lawrence $14M to be a run stopper??
This is a very limited way of thinking, for one. For two, we already have primary edge rushers on the team. We need more guys who can set the edge and defend the run.
Who's the primary edge rusher?? Reed at 6.5 sacks?
They are both 32, granted DeMarcus is half a year older. It's almost like you didn't even read the info provided.
Based on your comparison chart Smith is better at QB knockdowns and Pressures and has more sacks.

Give the dude a chance, Wolv. He's a hell of a player. I understand the concern, but this guy plays HARD every play, and he's very good against the run. Not average, VERY good. The Hawks can't sign every single free agent, gnome sayin?

Lawrence can do it all, at a high rate. He's not just a run stopper, though he is at the top of the league at it year in and year out.

Reed is not an edge rusher. That's Mafe, Hall and Nwosu.

Late to this one...but what was the Hawks D better at last year? QB pressure or stopping the run? If my memory serves correctly - they still struggled to stop the run consistently. So...very solid help stopping the run sounds like a win to me.

Not only that. You can never have enough edge rushers. Even if you have strength's, always add to it if you can, regardless the position.

I think Nwosu stays, just gets extended towards the summer when/if we need cap space and we can still draft an edge. We have 4 on the roster. 2 had injuries last year. Mafe is in the final year of his deal. Drafting an edge makes a ton of sense still.

Not sure it was posted. Still don’t have complete details but it’s a 3 year $32.49 million deal. Up to $10 million in incentives. Still $18 million guaranteed.

Honest question: If you are in the "this is a bad deal due to low sack numbers" camp: How did you feel about Red Bryant? He set the edge like a monster and was a key part of that D-line we worship. I didn't hear a single person saying Red Bryant was bad because he didn't get sacks? And yet Big Red has 4.5 CAREER SACKS. 4.5. He was still was a huge piece to the overall scheme. The pick up of D. Law is not about sacks. It's about attitude, experience, toughness, run stuffing, hard nosed, leadership. I love it. And he will no doubt have more sacks here than Big Red did. It's a piece to a greater puzzle and Mike Mac is building it in his way. I'm all in.

People that don’t like this deal haven’t watched a single damn snap of Tank playing football. He is a mega Elite talent.

Exactly. He matches energy with the best of them. This is not a soft man we signed. He is the spitting image of the type of player Mike Mac has been talking about in terms of the culture he wants to build here. What a great example he's going to set for Mafe, Murphy, etc. They will all be better for this pick up.
