Defensive Formations You Can't Wait to Possibly See

[Pandion Haliaetus]

Mine is a Nickel formation with 3 down lineman and 3 linebackers primed for 3rd and Long situations.

DL: Bennett, Bryant, and McDaniel

All are above 6'4, so if they fail to penetrate or collapse the line, they can still use their length to disrupt throwing lanes. Also enough girth on the line to hold up against the rush (and should not allow a 20 yard draw play up the middle to a Mack Strong on 3rd and 17).

LB: Irvin, Clemons, Avril

Who's going to rush, how many are going to rush are the two relevant questions? (That's thirty 2012 sacks on the table with Bennett making it thirty-nine) . All are big, athletic, strong, fast, and lengthy at around 6'3, 255-260 pounds. O-lines be scared.

CB: Sherman, Browner, Thurmond

S: Thomas, Chanchellor

Best 2ndary in the NFL. Earl plays the single high, Chanchellor acts like a 4th linebacker with a multitude of responsibilities depending on opposing personnel and sometimes could be a blitzer if the situation dictates it.

9 of 11 players in this formation are above 6'3. Crazy. With the Linebackers in particular, you can really sub a plethora of players in and out and likely get the same effect but I feel like the ones listed are our best at terrorizing the QB for sure.

At this point, I want to see a defensive alignment that visibly causes the QB to quit on a play. Either spike it or call a timeout. I think it could happen.

i dont recall ever seeing the PROWL formation that is in madden. where the linemen arent down except i think the nose. the others are just standing up. it looks mean but not sure how effective it would be.

It's actually a fairly common defense in college football. Bruce Irvin ran it under Rich Rod at WVU. Rodriguez then brought it to Arizona with him. Todd Graham at ASU also runs a variation of it at times. I think Wisconsin may as well.

It's mostly used to combat the spread.
