1. How can a 106 Yard fumble return be "official" when there isnt even yard markers, does some guy just look at it and say "eh, that was about 6 yards into the endzone, wouldn't ya say?" How come when a Running back takes handoff a few yards in the endzone he doesnt get those "phantom" yards too, or when a QB drops back and throws from the endzone?

2. There is so much concern over the spot of the ball and sometimes it even gets challenged but does anyone ever wonder if the chain gang ever messes up and places the chains wrong? so someone may get a bad chain placement and actually has closer to 11 yards to go for the first. I know the chain is 10 yards long but maybe they dont place it right on the Ball.

I know kinda weird but I always think about that sorta stuff.

When they bring the chains out I always wonder how they manage to place the start of the chain in the right place - I mean, if you can't tell if it's a first down from the chains at the side, how on earth do they get it right when they then run across the field with it?

They mark the closest line on the chain so as long as whoever marked the chalk lines was half way close the chains should be halfway close too. It is all rough estimation any way if you think about all the variables. It all starts w/ the ref spotting the ball by eye where "he felt" it should be spotted. That could add a 1 yard variance all by itself. That is why I hate the make or not by 1 link nonsense.lol
