The only thing about this signing is the unusual descalators, having to pay for injury protection for the niners organization, and 4 years worth of you can cut me options. All those things are good for the organization after he is gone not while he is there. I have to say I feel sorry for the guy, it looks like his agent did a poor job of getting him guaranteed money and structuring it so it helps him win while he is with the team.
A couple things....
1) He actually lowered his first year terms and took a small signing bonus which results in him only counting about 3 mil toward the cap this year which makes it easier to try to sign guys like Crabtree, Iupati, Boone, etc.
2) If he doesn't hit those De-escalators, even though its still a lot of money, its actually a below market deal. That makes it easier to resign players and also is banking on himself to either become an all-pro or win a SB.
3) He locked himself up for seven full years at a bit below market rate NOW. If the cap expands as expected and he pans out, in years 4, 5, and 6 he'll be grossly underpaid.
