I think we can all agree that the front office has very handily covered the Seahawks' basic offseason needs already. Percy Harvin and Michael Bennett were great pickups. But the Cliff Avril one bothers me. Excuse what I'm about to say, as it may be considered to many as sacrilegious. But the only conclusions that I can draw from this are: (pick your poison)
1) That Chris Clemons suffered a setback in his rehab from an injury that is more serious than what meets the eye. They brought Avril in on a contract that, not coincidentally, voids at the same time as Clemons'. Clemons is then cut. After three years of sitting back and watching from a 3rd down specialist, Pete's plan is for Bruce takes on the LEO role. Or, it could be quite the contrary...
2) Pete regrets 'reaching' for his 'ideal LEO' at 15. Avril becomes Pete's new prodigy and poster child, while Irvin remains continues his roll as a passing down specialist for the rest of his rookie contract. Or, last, but most likely...
3) I'm crazy.

I don't think you are crazy but looking at it the wrong way. I thinks yes it's about risk mediation to some degree given the injury and age. D they want him to come back full strength ? Yes, it makes them very able to win now

I figured that most people would choose 3. But I'm wondering how are we going to utilize all three edge rushers for two years, especially with Red Bryant at the 5 technique for the majority of downs? Doesn't make sense to me.

I think Pete just wants to have an absolutely sick 4 man rush with tons of options for rushing, tbh.

I imagine they'll rotate guys in so that the rushers are still fresh at the end of games. Kinda like the Giants have done for years.

It's all about situation defense these days and match ups. If Red just gets them into 2 and 8 advantage is to the Seahawk D and we bring in the pass rush packages

Pete said Avril can play OLB, which was a need for us this off-season. Getting depth at DE was also a need. Killed two birds with one stone.

Plus, you can never have too many pass rushers. Especially if they're giving you discounts like Avril and Bennett. Don't read too much into it.

Well, a lot depends on Clem, too. While they say he is recovering fast, this could also allow them to start the season with Clem on the PUP and come in after the first 6-7 weeks. Nice to have him for the stretch run.

With the speed we have brought in I think Blitz becomes a bigger part of the defense, we can drop Irvin, Avril, Bennett back and send guys, roll them on stunts all sorts of confusing as hell looks and packages. Still think we need that big push in the middle though to tie up guys on the run as well to keep the LB's able to roam and do their damage.

It wasn't 1 or 2, so I used process of elimination.

Irvin isn't a LEO yet. Clemons is a massive question mark for next season. Seattle publicly stated that they wanted add more pass rush at DE. It's all very cut and dry.

Whoa, so he's going to use Avril in something along the lines of a Julian Peterson type role? Interesting!

I don't see that, Avril has decent speed but Peterson had freakish speed, swim move and burst. I can see him lining up on a stack with one of our LB's or Irvin maybe and dropping back as LB some plays and Irvin others to contain an edge or something.

Basically a assignment nightmare for the Tackle and or designated blocker. If he's wide he's the LB inside the DE and either can come.

Make sense? When Pete and John start making sense and being predictable, it's time to move on. These two thrive on taking us to a new level. They live to surprise you and do the unexpected. Don't worry about it making any sense, because most of the football gurus just scratch their heads at their moves. It almost always turns out for the best in the end and they look like geniuses. Just get used to that and enjoy the ride
