I’m neither for nor against the Clay Matthews Russell Wilson hit but todays NFL would be better IMO if they still allowed hits like that.

Wilson was actively running and when you are running, you can get tagged at any time.

That time was the last time a defense could actually play hard. Everything now is disallowed and a flag would be thrown/ejection/suspension and fine, etc…

And before you call it a “dirty” hit, just remember, that time Seattle and Green Bay developed a real feud, rivalry and hatred between the two teams and if it was the other way around, Seahawks fans, wouldn’t have any issues with Rodgers being hit “hard or dirty” by a Seahawks player.

It’s a two way street.

You can’t play victim and call some things “legal” and other things “illegal/dirty” at your leisure when it’s most convenient and benefits greater for your player/team.
This. Totally agree that when the QB becomes a runner he's fair game to be tackled. I also think QB should not have the option to slide. That would even things up a bit.

I think the Wilson/Kap Sports Illustrated cover settled that Kap was no Wilson without need for Clay's input.

-- Several have referenced that he "did it on purpose". Um, yeah, he didn't accidently block him. Did he put a little extra oomph in it, sure. I hope our guys do. When we get a free shot at a QB, I hope we are bringing a little extra. That wasn't a shot that would end someone, but it would make them hurt a little extra. Mission accomplished.

Again, Russ didn't complain one bit about this hit. Not once. He said it's football.
If that happened to Brady or Mahomes, dude would be in prison
Glad you added Brady. We've been dealing with different treatment for the ultra-stars on the glamour teams forever. It didn't start with Mahomes.

Exactly. As much as I shit on Russ post seahawks he never was the recipient of those calls. He took the hits and kept on going. Now if these hits were on Brady or Manning every flag on the field gets thrown...

I don't know why people think Brady or Peyton didn't take vicious
hits, they were still in the era when the NFL was a bloodbath early
to mid years when they played.
I'm not sure either would try to make a tackle on a TO because you
open yourself to getting blocked hard, like you see with Me3.
I'm not saying that's a necessary block, but it was legal then.
As much as I don't like Me3, I never questioned his ability to take
hits like a man.

I've generally been in the "anti-Russ" category in the later years in Seattle, but him not complaining about that hit makes me respect him more.
Yeah Russ has always been a standup guy and has NEVER made excuses.

Then you must've been outraged with this hit...
Not even close to the same hit. Kam hit Davis to his chest. Russ got hit in the head turning his neck. This was almost as bad as Burfict and Brown hit. Lucky for Russ he didn't get all of the hit but the intent was there.Burfict hit brown 10

I was never a huge Hasselbeck fan but this conversation reminds me of his attempt to tackle an interceptor along the sideline in a playoff game and HE got penalized! Of course in that game official's calls against the grain were rampant. Seahawks being "the grain".

Not a fan of Mathews, but its obvious he wasn't targeting the head area, the back of his shoulder grazed Wilson's head and at that speed that's what happens. No where near the Burfect hit that looked like a 100% intentional head shot, comparing it to that is just completely ridiculous. Mathews even lowered his head at the last second.

It used to be on the players receiving the hit to keep their head on a swivel, now we have fans getting upset over bang bang plays in a contact sport because they can analyze it in slow motion.

I have always thought slides are fine. Just no head first slides. Defenders ease up and qb quickly slides head first for a first down. Feet first or head first should have the ball spotted at the start of the slide.

That was a tackle on a player who was in the process of catching the ball though - it's fair game to be on the receipt of a hard in those situations.

How was Wilson not fair game to be blocked?
