For Carpenter I think the trick is K.I.S.S. Keep it simple stupid. Tell him "Push Justin Smith as far back as you can and do nothing else." and I think he'll be okay. Don't tell him to look for someone at the second level or to pull or anything else, just tell him to push the one player backwards.

why does he need to be on the field? so he can pass out from hypoxia?

I wouldn't say a late round first carries as much expectation as a high first rounder, but especially on a team that seems to find defensive talent everywhere, I do reasonably expect a late first rounder to turn into a solid starter. Don't think it's too much to ask that he outplays McQuistan for goodness sake.

Sweezy is not a weak link, its McQuistan maybe not in other games but he is in this game because if he starts we won't get the running game going and it could look like first half in Carolina all over again. McQuistan is just physically unable to deal with smith and justin smith would probably collaspe the pocket at will. Carpenter at least has the strength to hold his ground with no help i do agree his second level blocking is not good but if he can just keep J. SMith out of the back field thats all the hawks need.
