If that's the personnel you wanted, why wouldn't you just play Wright at SAM where he's excelled in the past and Wagner at MLB where he's always been a beast?
Moving Wright to WLB was only done to get Irvin on the field. If they were set on Smith, Wright and Wagner as the LB core, then Wright probably would have stayed at SAM where he was very effective last year.
Nah, I just don't think Wright is strong enough to consistently attack the line without wearing out, Wright's range is much better in the middle of the field rather than having to go sideline to sideline. I also think Wright is the more cerebral player than Wagner at this point.
Malcolm Smith has great athleticism and great strength but he is also is small to consistently bully the POA at 230 ish. He fits the description of a 4-3 Will almost perfectly.
Bobby Wagner is a damn good MLB, would probably be an awesome WLB as well, but he might be the best LBer the team could have for the SAM position.
I like Irvin, and love his potential, but the defense seems better off giving him baby steps for now. I would feel different if he didn't miss most of training camp with a groin injury and most of the season being suspended.
Wagner just seems like he has the size, speed, strength, athleticism, and experience to be ultra effective near the line over Wright, Smith, or Irvin.
Wright is a smart football player and a leader, I think he is much more effective in a director role at a position where his lack of range isn't a huge weakness.
Smith is ultra effective in space in a more protected role.
I wouldn't mind seeing Irvin at Will down the road, where his size and athleticism could shut down big athletic TEs but Irvin is just to raw as a LBer right now to be counted on.
