Its something to think about.

Wright looks good at MLB.

Smith looks good at WLB.

Would Wagner look better near the LOS or no?

That would mean having Wagner/Wright/Smith Instead of Wagner/Wright/Irvin...I could see it situationally, but honestly I think we want to get Bruce on the field much more than Malcolm IMO

If that's the personnel you wanted, why wouldn't you just play Wright at SAM where he's excelled in the past and Wagner at MLB where he's always been a beast?

Moving Wright to WLB was only done to get Irvin on the field. If they were set on Smith, Wright and Wagner as the LB core, then Wright probably would have stayed at SAM where he was very effective last year.

I'd rather have bobby at the will. Dude has great mobility and would solve a lot of our short game, quick strike problems. But he's also an awesome mike soooo......

I think they should just swap KJ and Smith back to where they were last year, but really the Houston game was the only game where our LBers really struggled, at least from my point of view.

This would be much more preferrable.

Nah, I just don't think Wright is strong enough to consistently attack the line without wearing out, Wright's range is much better in the middle of the field rather than having to go sideline to sideline. I also think Wright is the more cerebral player than Wagner at this point.

Malcolm Smith has great athleticism and great strength but he is also is small to consistently bully the POA at 230 ish. He fits the description of a 4-3 Will almost perfectly.

Bobby Wagner is a damn good MLB, would probably be an awesome WLB as well, but he might be the best LBer the team could have for the SAM position.

I like Irvin, and love his potential, but the defense seems better off giving him baby steps for now. I would feel different if he didn't miss most of training camp with a groin injury and most of the season being suspended.

Wagner just seems like he has the size, speed, strength, athleticism, and experience to be ultra effective near the line over Wright, Smith, or Irvin.

Wright is a smart football player and a leader, I think he is much more effective in a director role at a position where his lack of range isn't a huge weakness.

Smith is ultra effective in space in a more protected role.

I wouldn't mind seeing Irvin at Will down the road, where his size and athleticism could shut down big athletic TEs but Irvin is just to raw as a LBer right now to be counted on.

Lol, I wasn't too serious, it would just be interesting to see if Wright would play better in the middle with Bobby Wagner terrorizing out of one of the OLB positions.

I know the team ISNT going to entertain this which is why its easy to suggest it.

Wright at MLB
Wagner at WLB
Smith/Irvin at SAM

Wyman made this suggestion on 710 today. I like KJ's physicality in the middle and would like to see this happen but who knows what Pete is thinking.

Smith at Sam? He's way too small to play the Sam. Sam plays the run up on the LOS in our system. He's the most like a 3-4 OLB of the 3 backers in our system (which is why Irvin makes sense as the sam). Smith doesn't make any sense at all; if they run at him, he'll get blown up by a fullback or a pulling guard. He's too small. You'd have to bring Kam down closer to the box for run support, which could limit what you can do with him.

Perhaps he was talking situationally, but if it's a passing situation I'd expect them to put in nickel personnel anyway. Or maybe Dave's thinking more of situations where Irvin would be up near the line in that spinner role we heard so much about in the off-season. I like the idea of Bobby and KJ swapping, and I like Smith's skillset, but it seems like unnecessary gymnastics to get him on the field. He's a great back up, no need to over think it.

Yea I heard Wyman say that too. He made the point that Wright is probably better than Wagner at fighting off blocks, and Wagner's strength is his speed and ability to diagnose things quickly and tackle. Freeing him up from fighting through blocks would let him really fly around. I can certainly see the logic, but it seems like Wagner really is doing great in the middle and has his finger on the pulse of the Defense. I'd like to see him continue to develop in that role.

I like Smith at the WL. He's very fast he us like 4.x 40 and has good size. I like KJ in the middle. His height gives him good leverage and he plugs well. Wagner gets trapped far too much IMO.

That IMO is the best grouping.

I like KJ at MLB as for the rest it's not a big problem we have LB's on this team that can fill the other two spots .
