I noticed within the last two weeks that Byron Murphy has been elevated to starter/first string over Jonathan Hankins on the Seahawks.com depth chart.

Ironically Hankins moved to second string on depth chart after the game when he (Hankins) leaped up and made interception on ball tipped up by Spoon.

My interpretation of this change is that Murphy is now grading ahead of Hankins defending against the run.

Makes sense. Murphy might not have been the "starter", but he was on the field considerably more. He played exactly double the snaps Hankins did the past two weeks.

Hankins is a 32-year-old, 12-year vet who has played in double-digit games in 11 of them (had one year with nine). I assume the team didn't want him starting long. Hopefully, he's pretty fresh right now having only logged 29 snaps over the past two games combined. DL depth is critical at this point in the season, and Leonard Williams has been a bit hobbled.

If you watch that video, the dude is a freak of nature on some plays. There's one about halfway through where he gets doubled, goes down to a knee to gain leverage, wrenched to his right (by 2x 300lb) guys, and fights his way back to his feet pancaking the center to pursue the play. The run was supposed to go to his gap...

Nope.

Williams feasted off of the rook forcing the double teams.

Murphy is a beast. He’s only 21. The sacks will come. I still think we draft someone like Tyleik Williams and this line will be hard to contain for years. Can’t double team everybody

He was a great pick. Just what this team was sorely lacking.

I think some fans don't see him ranked up there with the good ones in pressures/sacks and might think otherwise but he provides exactly what this team was missing. I'd love to see another young stud to add to the mix this coming draft too.

Loving the teamwork aspect of this study here, how Murph doesn't get the stats or obvious credit for his play, when so often what he does lets one of this teammates make the play. It's something the average TV announcer doesn't mention.

Opposing teams picked the most destructive player to double-team against; in our case, they chose mostly Byron Murphy. Our boy will become a super star if he can consistently beat double-teaming.

Sacks is not his job, he will probably never be even in the top 10, inside pressure to collapse the pocket and plugging gaps to against the run as well as keeping Lineman off the LB's so they can play down hill.

I know. He’s currently sitting at .5 sacks. Just saying in time they will come. But you’re right. That’s not his game
