Boom

Maxwell, and Carp last ones if we want them before Wagner and Wilson

I doubt either of those guys get resigned.

I'm not really sure why he grouped Maxwell with Carpenter.

I think it would be a mistake to not resign Maxwell, personally.

Not personal. It's a fiscal reality.

.net GMs (pehawk and others) on the KJ Wright thread were all gloom and doom saying Avril was gone and possibly Wagner too as a result of the KJ contract

.... the next day Avril gets an extension

You can't make this sh-- up.

You clearly do not realize the true expertise of random internet fans and armchair coaches/GM's. But yeah, it is pretty hilarious considering I was slammed for mentioning that not one of these internet geniuses knew anything at all when it comes to NFL scouting, management and coaching. Got a pretty big chuckle when I heard the news about Avril this morning.

It's interesting how they're giving players big guarantees. Really smart approach. You lockup the guys you know will play hard and practice hard, don't worry about the dead cap money if you have to release them and free up cap room by doing so. It's significant that Avril will be making approx $7m/yr average, with $4m being bonus money. So actual cap hit is less than half of the contract value. Sure, Seattle takes the risk that he must play out the contract, but giving those contracts to guys who've played well and practiced well really seems to make sense. Also says a lot about what the coaches are seeing from these guys behind the scenes.

I bagged on the "forum experts" for dogging on KJ because they don't have the first clue what happens behind the scenes. Not one of us gets access to the practices, training and meeting rooms. That the Seahawks were willing to offer KJ and Avril so much guaranteed money really speaks to what THEY were seeing.

And that's supremely awesome news for Seahawks fans. Dynasty in the making...

Still hoping the Cards win the SB? Guaranteed it, didn't you?

I loved the Avril news. Loved it.

I am very pleasantly surprised; I'd thought that Avril was on his way out due to market value and the cap. Fantastic, fantastic news.

You've got to believe that the team will re-sign Wagner and Wilson in the offseason. The numbers must be right in someone's ledger for a deal like this to be made right now.

This defense could go down as one of the all time great defenses.

Statistically speaking, we already are. But sustaining it for a few years more with contracts like this would just cement that fact in people's minds.

Awesome news. Last year I had an irrational fear that we'd see Tate walk, which actually proved true. My irrational fear this year was that Avril would walk. Which proved false.

I think our pass rush is very effective but also fringe in nature. It's not like our pass rush dominates, it just 'gets after it' so to speak; we have a 'hustle' pass rush, not an ass-kicking pass rush. The thing about being a unit that finds success with effort and haste is that it tends to be on the fringes of failure. Remember the 2012 pass rush after Clemons went down? Remember the pass rush earlier this season that struggled to get sacks and caused people to hand wring over Clinton McDonald? I'm not saying Jordan Hill is some kind of savior, but look at the difference he's made on our pass rush just by improving from 'just a guy' to a difference maker.

Point being, I think our pass rush is good right now, but could be one key loss away from being bad. I don't see a replacement for Avril on this roster. Marsh is still less than 100% proven and is a situational player anyway. It is very hard to draft instant impact pass rushers. And there aren't any pending UFA players next march that would upgrade over Avril and cost less than $100 million. Avril isn't an amazing player, but he's a good player at a position of premium importance to Seattle. This signing is a big deal.

And to all the people giving the arm-chair commentary, I think it's really childish and petty. And quite disappointing coming from a few posters that I am a bit surprised to see it from.

He is quite old though. Maybe he doesn't get these kids and their emojis (to be fair, I don't really either) and thinks that when he leaves the board to have a cup of coffee he is required to put up a little "back soon" notice?

I stand corrected, it did lead to real discussion.

I think HH has a caffeine addiction, and the emoji is his cry for help.

I'm sorry, what am I missing?

Looks like your on a tear Scotte.

I think the point he's making is there's a rampant culture of behavior which prohibits, and actually discourages, thoughtful discussion.

I've said it a few times, ALOT of the smarter posters here wont post in the main forum because it's a cesspool and will turn in to "you negative nancies we're wrong...look...I quoted it". They just wont.

I got a PM about an hour before the Avril news broke which read as the following;

Sent: Fri Dec 19, 2014 6:02 am
From: %%%%%%%
To: pehawk

Do you never get tired of all the complete dickheads on this forum? It's been really wearing on me this past year or so.

But hey, look, there's a post in the shack calling it out....quick! C'mon, all grinches, follow me!

Lets be honest. The REAL conversation is always about what .net thinks and why they're wrong. :stirthepot:

I appreciate your attempt to make the best of the situation, but if I am involved then it's not really a real discussion.

I loved the Avril news. Loved it.

Never "hoped" they'd win the Superbowl and never guaranteed anything. Other than trying to insult my fanhood, what point are you trying to make by distorting my words? That I'm not an "expert" because I thought Arizona was playing outstanding football before we played them? Because I thought they were going to beat us, when they were peaking and we were slumping?

Wow. You got me there. I gave a strong opponent credit for playing great football. How stupid of me!

Further, I've never claimed to be an expert. I'm openly admitting I don't have the first clue how well these guys are playing when I watch the game. That was the point. How would I know? I'm not a coach.

I enjoy the game as a fan, knowing full well that I lack the education and NFL coaching experience to really break down what's happening out there too much. So I rely on the coaches' and players' reactions and opinions, and put value on those. When Pete Carroll expresses excitement about signing someone, or how someone is playing, I take that at face value and I get excited.

I only become annoyed when myself and others are insulted for expressing this excitement, and derided by "experts" who obviously know better.

It says a lot that I never addressed my skepticism to anyone on this forum personally, but a few posters have reacted very strongly to it. The vast majority of the forum didn't react at all, because they don't think they're experts so why would they care? It's hardly insulting to other fans to say that we don't really know what's going on out there.

But a few people obviously feel they ARE experts, and reacted strongly. Many of the same people who I see insulting new users on the forum, or acting as if their post counts give them some leg up on the rest of us pathetic noobs. Often, they played college ball or coached some little league team or whatever, so they know and the rest of us are below them. (In the sciences, this is referred to as "the appeal to false authority").

I find it comical that these "experts" get butthurt when other fans remind them that they're just fans like the rest of us, and not experts, and that they have no special insight. It's hardly my fault that they take offense to this. Only someone who falsely assumes they have special insight or expertise could ever take offense, and only if they take that too seriously.

This truth becomes more evident when you see the humility displayed by former pro's like Warren Moon and Brock Huard when they are trying to break down film. I've heard Pete Carroll literally laugh at Brock Huard when he tried unsuccessfully to break down a play, and Brock's response was laughter, acceptance, and humility. That says a lot, and is a lot more respectable than if Brock Huard was to lose his temper and shout "How dare you!!!"
