I'm actually really stoked for Christine Michael. Think he'll be a beast as a return man. Leon with power.

Missed him the second he was gone...didn't like the idea of a starting WR making that much money returning kicks. I don't like the idea of Tate doing it either tbh...

I just made the comment in another thread that the trade for Harvin had one drawback for me and that was losing Leon. Hopefully Tate and as JSeahawks points out, Christine Michael, can offer some of the same key returns that Leon could make. He has some big time returns last year.

Yes but not because of his return abilities. I liked Leon, but Harvin being injured doesn't mean us traded Leon (or cutting, can't remember) wasn't the right move.

I mean do we even know if Harvin was going to return anything here?

Rather have a third running back that can play within the offense. Rather then a cap hit that could return kicks well, with a very good special teams unit blocking for him.

Harvin and Pete were both quoted as saying Harvin would be returning Kick-offs. This was a day or so after cutting Leon.

Well...regardless, I highly doubt the Hawks would have kept 4 RBs on the roster this year even without the Harvin trade.

Nope, not me. No point in wasting a roster spot on someone who only returns kicks, most of which end up as touchbacks now with the kickoff line moved up.

There's only some assumptions they carry 4 Lynch, Turbin, Michael, Robinson, Ware (not counting Harvin).

I for one said it was stupid to release Leon (the player) when it happened (more on that in a moment). The million and a half in "cap space" I kept hearing about was not worth chopping the guy from the team. He went out wide for us and could serve a role similar to Harvin through practices and preseason. I figured they'd at least keep him around until training camp in case Harvin's ankle hadn't healed fully or if Rice was hurting and Harvin and Baldwin and Tate were getting shuffled around to cover for Rice.

But.... I also felt that there was no sense in having Harvin return kicks. So I got lambasted for that idea too. Oh well. I am still not saying I am right. I am just saying that was my preference considering his coming off of an ankle. Those take a long time to heal for even the most elite athletes. Longer than leg fractures even. So I was being overly cautious I guess.... but I still feel it was risky considering he ended on IR.

I will say this though... by the Hawks releasing Leon (the person) when they did, they got some goodwill points with Leon and other players I believe. They could have been selfish and showcased him in the preseason games 1 and 2 and then tried to work somebody for a late rounder, but they did what was right by him letting him catch on with somebody early, which he did. So it was a good class move by the team to not drag it out for short term gain. They did the right thing by the guy if they weren't fully committed to letting him play in his normal spot this year.

Oh well. Life goes on. Hopefully Jeremy Lane is ready to run some kicks. He's a quick little guy. Turbin is not a bad returner either. I've seen him do it and look very competent. He's not a burner, but he's smart and finds gaps.

I'll take the high-side here and hope (think) you might be right J.........

BUTT :moon.:

....if the Michael-project fails....??????
I don't want to see Golden returning kicks. We've already lost one offensive weapon.....no thank you !!

I was referring to RBs, not RBs and FBs. Meaning even without Harvin, I highly doubt the Hawks would have kept Lynch, Turbin, Michael and Washington.

I'd be willing to bet it was more about the roster spot rather the salary relief

I agree. I was saying it wasn't for salary relief. But guys were telling me it was. That didn't make sense to me since we didn't have cap trouble. The roster spot wasn't a big issue at the time. They could have waited until they saw what they got in the draft, or possibly even gotten a pick. I think they just preferred to let him move on quicker, which is classy.

I also remember TB wanting to trade for him but he didn't want to go there so they outright released so he could choose his team. I love this FO.

Leon didn't really have a place on this roster. The team is already going to hold on to Lynch, Turbin, Michael, RealRob, and possibly Ware at RB. That's 4 maybe 5 roster spots, and a 6th would be way too many. I view kick returners kind of like a closer in baseball. They're fairly valuable, and can win (or lose) you games, but for the most part they're not hard to find. Think about all the potential big play returners we already on the roster: Michael, Tate, Lane, Thurmond, etc.

The cutting of Leon was partly a cap issue, but mostly due to a lack of a roster spot IMO.
