What you say is all true and yet there's always mid/late round picks that end up being steals.

Amon-Ra St. Brown
Puca Nacua
George Kittle
Maxx Crosby
Fred Warner
Tyreek Hill

To name a few recent steals. Maybe some had red flags, I don't think all. I know Crosby got bigger / stronger and quit partying, not sure about the rest. Some just fall through the cracks.
Agreed but the point I am making is if someone is "likely to be a steal", they wont be a steal because they will be taken earlier. I can't remember but how many of those guys were being talked about as steals before the draft, I doubt any were?

Our biggest steal, RW3, was considered a reach by almost everyone.

Sometimes it's just about going to the right situation. coaching, opportunity, scheme, utilization, etc
Let me preface this buy clarifying that I despise the Ducks and their school and anything associated with them - but I often think this about Marcus Mariota. Seems like a truly good dude that would have MAYBE flourished if he had ended up in a different environment. What do you think he might have looked like if coached by Pete or Andy Reid that Rams coach?

Marcus is a good piano player. I wouldn't draft Gabriel. But look at Darnold. It's a crap shoot. Everytime Burch beat the the tackle and made a play on The way to the big ten championship.....Burch Beer!

Here is a dude I'm going to plant the flag for. Underrated and pretty much no one is talking about him.

Benjamin Yurosek out of Georgia is going to make some GM look really really smart. He only caught 15 passes his red-shirt Senior year at GU. Before that in 2023, his season ended early during his last year at Stanford.

Prior to that, he caught nearly 100 catches for over 1,100 yards over 2 seasons with poor QB play. He was 'the dude' on offense. He was everywhere. Inline, H-Back, Fly-sweeps, Wide-Out. Ran every route. Wheel routes, seam routes, boot-legs.

Blocked all the time at Georgia...Huge part of his game. Isn't the biggest TE, but big enough. The athleticism hasn't gone away. He is a legit receiving threat and I think he can be had at a huge discount. He should go somewhere after the 4th or 5th round. If we are looking for our own version of George Kittle...

Pro-Day Results:
- 40-yard: 4.64
- 3-Cone: 7.16
- Shuttle: 4.39
- Vertical: 31.5''
- Broad: 9'7

I don't follow the college game much but I am wondering how you predict a steal.

If you know someone is very likely to have an impact in the NFL then surely the scouts of NFL teams know that and they will be drafted high, with lower picks taken by those expected to have less of an impact or with red flags meaning while there is a chance they could have a significant impact it is also very likely they will bust.
Humans are flawed and have natural biases. Terrible scouts are always looking for players to fit those preconceived notions that they are comfortable with. So they used to want that prototypical QB, that was 6'4" and had a rocket arm. WR's that could run closest to 4.2, etc. Workout numbers are not a guarantee of a good football player, imho. Great organizations have innovative systems that find their type of players that no one wants. The Pats started it and that's also the reason someone like Kupp can have monster careers.

Kansas has a pair of WR in this draft, Grimm and Skinner, that will likely draw little attention. Kind of Deebo light. Both are game breaking catchers, get open, run any route, move the chains, run like coyotes after the catch. Someone will get them and find big benefit they didn't really expect.

I don't know if he'll be a "steal, but Kansas also has a record breaking running back, Devon Neal, who is of the highest character you can imagine. Hard and humble worker. To be a record holder at Kansas might not mean a lot to a lot of folks, but considering Kansas is where Gale Sayers, Curtis McClinton, John Riggins, and many more played it is a notable accomplishment. He gets yards when there aren't any to get and breaks off big ones when you least expect it. High quality player.
