Who the **** forgave Hutch?
Regarding Hutchinson, I blame Ruskell for dropping the ball on that. The Vikings outsmarted him, Hutch signed the contract, but that was our front office’s own incompetence for allowing that to happen.

Iirc, Ruskell’s secretary faxed the wrong paperwork while he was on vacation or something. In today’s day and age, that doesn’t happen. But it happened, Hutch is employed by the team now and was a strong voice to bring in Grey Zabel, so that alone should allow him to be forgiven.

It depends on who's in his class when his name comes up, but I'd bet heavily against a first ballot selection.

IMO the most telling factor is his failure to get even one vote for league MVP in 14 seasons with 50 ballots being cast each year. Granted, there are very few if any who casted votes for MVP who will be voting on HOF inductees, but it's very much the same process and the same types of people involved in the voting.

You also have to consider the huge belly flop at the end of his career, something that his contemporaries don't have to make excuses for.
Great points, and you’ll probably be proven right. Hell, I was also thinking Shaun Alexander would be first ballot and here we are. 😂

Wilson’s Denver tenure also hurt his perception around the league as well. They gave him the keys to the franchise, gave him a private office and like you said, completely belly flopped.

Thanks for manning up.

How many people would have said that Bill Belichick would have gotten in on the first ballot? It requires 40 out of the 50 votes, and that's a pretty high bar to clear.

And yes, that horrible Denver year really hurt Russell's perception, and one of the major reasons why I lost so much respect for him as a person.

I'm not understanding this thing that one person is saying where MVPs and All-Pro are apparently irrelevant and don't matter to the voters, but stats like QB rating, which heavily favor recent QBs do.

No reasonable person would have Joe Montana outside the top 3-5 QBs of all time. He currently ranks 27th all time in QB rating. Of the 26 ahead of him, only two retired before 2010: T12 Steve Young and #22 Kurt Warner. What does that tell you about how the game has evolved and how much easier it is to pass efficiently now?

Currently, Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers are tied for #1. Russ is fifth btw, someone earlier said he's second. Others ahead of Joe Montana include #6 DeShaun Watson, #8 Dak Prescott, #9 Jimmy Garoppolo, #11 Tony Romo, T12 Kirk Cousins, T12 Jordan Love, #17 Tua Tagovailoa, #18 Justin Herbert, T20 Jalen Hurts, and #25 Derek Carr. Other players in the top 50 include Ryan Tannehill, Teddy Bridgewater, Marcus Mariota, Colin Kaepernick, Gardner Minshew, Tyrod Taylor, Andy Dalton, Geno Smith, Mac Jones, and Daniel Jones. Sam Darnold is sitting at 50th, 0.1 rating points ahead of the equally highly-regarded duo of Dan Marino and Jacoby Brissett.

Alexander should have made it by now btw. He absolutely has the numbers, but is a victim of a RB logjam. I think he gets in as a senior committee nomination in the future. With bellcow backs being a thing of the past, his numbers will continue to look impressive.

RCW owns the #1 place in NFL history for how much money a team ate to cut him. Since it's the hall of Fame, that makes him pretty famous. ...not good, but famous. This argument has become ridiculous so somehow that seems relevant.

Broadcasters and owners have paths to the hof so RCW will never stop trying to be famous enough to make it. This thread and the others will continue until Russ and Ciara are old and gray and need a step ladder to get in and out of their pickup.

I think he'll make it someday. Then, 2 years later, the Committee will realize their mistake and pay $50M to kick him out if Canton.

With regards to his new gig, I don't watch hardly any of the pregame or halftime shows, so it's unlikely that I'll see much of Russell as a commentator.

However, I do think that he has a better chance of succeeding in a pregame show than he would if he took a job in the booth and live action. The advantage he has in the pregame environment is that he can rehearse his comments and won't be required to be spontaneous.

A smart handler can review what he wants to say and steer him away from the cringy one liners and his tendency to talk in cliches that was such a turnoff for a lot of people, including Yours Truly. It was like listening to someone telling knock-knock jokes and thinking that they were funny.

I actually think he'll do very well in his new role. I remember being incredibly impressed with him on the Manningcast. I always thought people who assumed he could coach were delusional, as his game seems to be based almost exclusively on feel and instinct, but he's a confident, well-spoken guy who can deliver good sound bytes. I'll bet his ultimate goal is some kind of highly-viewed variety show like what Michael Strahan does.

RW when he was on fire was literally a highlight reel from week to week. Hero ball to a new level that translated into many wins and a SB championship.

I mean that is the dream for anyone that plays and watches football. End of an era.

Can yall keep the thread on the OPs topic.
My bad everyone. I just get so passionate talking about Wilson. He brought us a lot of happy moments, and for me personally, some great memories when not a lot was going right in life. I just love the guy and I found him inspirational when he explained goal setting, and other life advice that I’ve taken to heart even to today.

He has a degree in communication, so he will do well in his new role.
I'm not so sure how much that's going to help him. Russell's biggest challenge is going to be to sound authentic and credible. He's not going to be able to end his broadcasts with a "Let's Ride" or some other corny one liner.

I don't think a great deal of authenticity is needed for those studio pregame shows. They're largely scripted without much off the cuff thinking that's more than a few lines here and there on something they're all experts on.

You guys are going to get this thread locked. It’s an appreciation thread.

I appreciate Russell Wilson, and that’s the last thing I’ll say in this thread about that. I wish him the best and thank him for what he did during his time here.

I was confused about whether it was an appreciation thread due to the lack of the words "appreciation thread" in the title that doesn't even appreciate the subject enough to spell his name correctly.
