I was struggling to figure it also. Asked my co-pilot and here is what it came up with. I understand more now.
What Is the MLB Draft Slot System?
The MLB Draft uses a
slotting system for the first 10 rounds, where each draft pick is assigned a
recommended dollar value—called a
slot value. These values are set by MLB and reflect what teams are
suggested to offer as signing bonuses.
- Example: In 2025, the No. 1 overall pick (Nationals) has a slot value of $11,075,900.
- These values decrease with each pick down the draft order.
Bonus Pool: The Team’s Spending Limit
Each team gets a
bonus pool, which is the total of all their slot values for picks in the first 10 rounds.
- Teams can sign players for less than slot value and use the savings elsewhere.
- They can also go over slot, but that risks penalties:
- 0–5% over: 75% tax on the excess.
- 5–10% over: Lose a first-round pick + 75% tax.
- 10–15% over: Lose first and second-round picks + 100% tax.
- Over 15%: Lose two first-round picks + 100% tax.
Strategic Drafting
Teams often
negotiate deals:
- Sign a player under slot early to save money.
- Use those savings to lure a later-round pick over slot—like a high schooler who might otherwise choose college.
It’s like a game of financial chess—balancing talent, risk, and budget.
