John needs to accept what the problem is and fix it, though I doubt he does.
Of course new coaches Kubiak & Benton are going to say they can work with the existing OL. What are they going to say?, "Your picks are subpar junk, we need to scrap some of this and start over."
No, they were just hired, they don't want their coaching abilities to appear weak or substandard. And they sure don't want to insult John right out the gate by implying his OL picks are mostly projects.
It all fits perfectly for John and his IOL is overdrafted & overvalued mindset which gives him more ammo to draft fun, shiny toys.
How many OC's, OL coaches and OL draft picks & FA's do we need to plow through with years of bottom ranked OL until they figure out how to fix it?
It is time to stop recruiting Dlll players to perform on a D1 team. There are very few college offensive linemen good enough to start in the NFL, most will be found in the first two rounds of the draft.
It's not coaching, it's not scheme, the fact that our higher pick OT's are holding their own proves this. It is lack of talent which makes consistency & continuity impossible. Couple that with weak depth & injuries and you have bottom feeder OL performance for years running.
John needs to recognize that his stance of IOL being overvalued has failed the team. They need an influx of talent to fix this.
Used #18, one of the 2nd and one of the 3rd rounders on OG, T/G, Center-C/G early. Most of the talent & difference makers will be gone by the end of the second round.
We also need to sign a couple undrafted FA's and sign a vet OL preseason cut.
We are last in OL cap spending, some teams pay one OLineman more than we pay all our starting OL. In 2013 we had one of the highest paid offensive lines.
Relying on mid-rounders after the talent is gobbled up will keep us on the same path of continued struggle.
Can John set aside a couple of his shiny toy visions in place of hitching some workhorses to the wagon to pull the toys we already have? We will see, it's his baby.
