In his first game back, Abe Lucas was already the best offensive lineman on the field yesterday. He got a pass block grade of 73.4 and a run block grade of 79.0. Olu has a pretty impressive run blocking grade for the day. You can see the sharp drop-off with Jerrell on pass blocking. (His high run block grade is misleading due to the small sample size.)

It will be huge for this team if Abe can continue to be available.

Abe, Olu and Haynes are playing for a combined 3.4m cap hit this season on rookie contracts. When we get production from them then our roster value skyrockets and suddenly we can afford a few big contracts (Geno, DK, Williams).

Maybe we just missed on Haynes but he was widely viewed as a top 3 guard prospect. Figuring out how to work him back in should be a priority as that would help enormously in the long term.

And Abe was dealing with Bosa on many of those snaps
True, but Bosa was dealing with injury himself and took himself out of the game. From what I recall, Bosa only got around Abe one time for a QB hit.

He's just one hell of a football player. No way that JS could have known he was going to have this many missed games.
Bears drafted Velus Jones (a total bust) at #71 right before JS drafted Lucas at #72. Even at the time, I thought Poles was nuts. He has a weakness for any WR who can run 4.4 or lower.

When MM was giving out the game balls... both Lucas and Olu got one.

I feel like this team is getting more physical and closer to looking like they belong on the field with a good team. A physical rushing attack is the biggest thing holding this team back now. Hope we can start getting some continuity now on the oline.

Continuity is always a major plus for a good O-line. It's the one unit that needs absolute cooperation in every play to make things work. Plus they need to know each other's tendencies when the ferilizer hits the ventilator. If you know what the guy next to you will do in a given situation you know better what to do yourself. Constant turnover is a killer.

I think it's kinda funny that the first line under "strengths" on his NFL.com draft profile is literally:

  • Durable four-year starter with impressive body composition.

Sometimes you just don't know. I was concerned with how slowly he seemed to be healing, but that first game back was better than what even the most optimistic projections could have been. Extremely promising.

I'm not sure Haynes makes the team next year if he doesn't improve what the coaching staff has cited. Tomlinson has not been great but has been somewhat serviceable. I hope Haynes can improve, just not sure he will.
