We don't know where Geno and Lock will be come draft time nor whether the front office would be happy to have Lock as the main man next season.

A top 3 pick gets you an elite prospect but that doesn't always turn into an elite QB. 2018 had Mayfiled taken at 1 and Darnold at 3, 2017 saw Trubisky taken at 2, 2016 had Goff and Wentz in the top 2 spots, 2015 had Winston and Mariota, 2014 Bortles. None of those would really be classed as Franchise backs.

Hopefully we will get Geno on a long term deal, back-up can then either be Lock, a later round pick or some career back-up, which leave the No 3 pick for something else. We need to sign at least 20 players for next season and having signed Geno we will be tight on cap space so the more rookies we can get the better. If we trade down a couple of times and turn that Number 3 to something like 10 and a couple of 2nd rounders I think our defence can be improved more than getting Carter or Anderson. Of course that requires finding teams that want to trade up.

If Geno is on a franchise tag, we really need to look for our QB of 2024. It might be that Lock is that guy, it should be possible to keep him on a low salary with a big starting bonus, if not then we don't need to spend a top 3 pick on an expected finished article so we can get a QB either with our 1st Round pick or a 2nd / 3rd rounder.

If Geno goes elsewhere, getting a QB early is definately an option but I would still be cool with Lock and a later pick competing for the starting spot.
I am not big on drafting a QB in the 1st round if it misses it sets your team back at least 3 years. There is a 75% failure rate. During a recent Thursday night game they had a graphic of the last 18 QBs that were drafted in the 1 st round only 4 are still with the teams that drafted them.

IMO it’s safer to draft for defense and O line and hopefully develop a game manager

I'm fine with skipping QB entirely in this draft and getting one next year. I have the perfect guy for us all picked out. This year I want to see us get a McDonald clone, another great LB, and the best edge rusher we can find. I don't agree to ignore need for best available athlete. My method would be to pick the best available athlete for my position of need.

I think I agree with you though you put the emphasis the other way. We shouldn't pick the best available player if we have no need in that area but neither should we forced ourselves into a single position for each pick.
If we decide you greatest need is DL and come the number 3 pick Carter has gone but Anderson is still available we should draft Anderson over someone like Bresee unless we believe Bresee is the better talent, but we shouldn't be drafting a tackle even if they are best available because it isn't a position of need.

Problem is this will be our best opportunity to have a top draft pick where the best available QB’s are. Next year when we make the playoffs we will be picking from the bottom of the draft and not have a top draft pick. It would cost waaaay to much to get a quality QB in trade or trade up in next draft. IMHO I say draft a QB with first first round pick and let him rid behind Geno a year or two. Bring him along and develop him. Then use rest of picks for everything else. Strike while we can. People have complained about our draft picks over the years but we have picked at the bottom of the draft most years. Look at what happens when we get to pick higher up like last year…..

Draft a QB if they feel their is a franchise type. As much as folks like to quote how many first round QBs are busts, the 2nd round percentage is worse and the third round is worse yet. It really isn't close. This may be the last time in a long while for a top 5 pick and a top 5 pick gives you a better shot at a franchise QB than picking one late by a lot. To early to say but Anthony Richardson looks like he could be developed into a franchise type. Also while talking about busts been plenty of DT and pass rushers that got drafted early and busted or at least disappointed. Last year some were certain Jordon Davis would be a beast, but he hasn't been, played 7 games 8 solo tackles, 6 assisted tackles, no sacks and landed on the IR.

Forget the "franchise QB." Unless there is a Mahomes or a Allen available, don't waste your draft capital taking a player who's ceiling is, more likely than not, Cousins.

Forget trying to get the "BPA," in the first 5.

The draft is a numbers game. 70% of 1st round picks don't sign a second contract with the team that drafted them, 75% of second round picks don't.

Trade that 1st pick to some desperate team, for more picks or players and picks. Churn and burn built the Championship years for us. Let's go back to the well.

Take your QB from the scrap heap, or the third round. Build a supporting offense around him. Stay cheap at the position.

Just what I would like to see them do.

Trade down for five fifth round picks? Yeah, that's the ticket!
Close....but of course we have to trade that 3rd, our second rounder, and our 4th rounder for the second pic then trade down for the 5 5th round picks.

The failure rate on pass rushers is high too.

We also have to look at the teams that draft high. They often fail to develop players at many positions.

The owners get involved and they start the qb too early with a bad offensive line and ruin their confidence before they come close to understanding a complex nfl defense.

These same teams fire coaches and some of these highly drafted qb’s have two different coordinators in their first two years.

There are a ton of great edge rusher available in the draft, I think the Hawks can get a great one with their own selection.

With #3, I think they should take Bryce Young....if he's not available they should take Jalen Carter.

This is no knock on Carter, I just think Young is a special QB who has a good head on his shoulders. Franchise QBs are not a dime a dozen.
