Why not see if you can get Sam Darnold? Do you think the Vikings pay him for a long term deal? If not and the Seahawks like JJ, then offer up what you can and see what the Vikings say.

What really confuses me about this forum is the notion that you need an elite/franchise QB to compete. That is far from the truth and really what is needed is a solid football team. If you land an elite/franchise QB that is the cherry on top but not the necessary ingredient. If you mean a "franchise QB" well not all franchise QBs are elite but once again once franchise QBs are paid they take up a lot of cap space because they want to be paid like they are elite. That is what happened to Jacksonville and Lawrence.

Is Stafford elite? Is Mayfield elite? Is Darnold Elite? Would you categorize any of these three QBs as franchise QBs?

You see I have followed closely the discussions on these boards the last few months and it is too focused on the QB position. The Seahawks need to continue to build the TEAM before thinking about QB.

Now if a QB in round 1 is there you pull the trigger. Cheap five year rookie deal and a trial run to see if they can be an franchise QB or a bridge QB.

Let's see who the 4 teams are left standing in the playoffs and determine if a franchise qb is needed to get that far...

Last year it was three first-round QBs and the biggest seventh-round outlier in NFL history. Mahomes, Lamar, and Goff are still seen as franchise QBs. I'd argue Purdy has mostly played like one, but there's a lot of debate on him.

Purdy got there on the back of a stellar personnel around hi....how's he doing this year? While I'll agree he doesn't look like a typical 7th rd pick he's not a guy is am paying hundreds of millions to lead a team...I hope the niners give him 50 mill a year...

That's such an extreme example though. How many 2000 Ravens defenses are there? As difficult as finding a franchise QB is, it's much easier than recreating what they had.
I like extreme - you should see my panic room.

Well then Dilfer is definitely not an option. Unless y’all think he could still do it.
Not in favor, personally. Somehow Dilfer is currently failing at getting fired from a job where he's clearly trying to get fired.

Agreed. At this point it’s just about as likely to get Burrow as it is Dilfer

This forum has slowly evolved into anyone but Geno.

Well in a way that happened with Wilson's last year with the Hawks too. QBs receive a lot of scrutiny for the failure of a team. But the elephant in the room is that it is taking time to transform and build a team so the Seahawks can compete with the NFC and AFC teams.

The Bucs and Rams are doing it under cap constraints and so did the Broncos too so turn arounds can happen.

Hawks have one of the most talented teams in the NFL but they have to keep stacking talent. The QB position will be sorted out sooner or later for the Hawks if they take care of business with regards to the rest of the roster.

The Ravens didn't plan to draft L. Jackson but they had a strong core team put together and figured why not? The 49ers were a solid core team and then Purdy came along at an opportune time. The Vikings? It looked like they were a lucky team but they let Cousins walk, draft JJ and still succeed with Darnold that indicates to me they built a team.

Eagles and Howie Roseman re-invent the Eagles year and year out and rebuild entire units on one side of the ball in a blink. Hurts wasn't their long term plan but they figured why not?

The Steelers operate on this mindset for a long time as an organization and franchise and the same with the Ravens.

I like to call it the Carr effect because drafting a QB first and then building a team around that QB is hard and can ruin any drafted QB. The Patriots for example are doing it the hard way with Maye this year.

QB is the easy target for literally all fanbases, we aren't immune to that.

And, frankly, a lot of the Geno discussion here is residual 'Pete vs. Russ' arguments that have just transformed since both Pete and Russ are gone.

But, as you noted, the truth is that the system around a QB is usually more important than the QB himself. The Seahawks don't have a system around their QB. Only one winning team in the league relies on their QBs arm more for offense than the Seahawks do. (If you're wondering who, it's the Vikings, who have a very good pass blocking offensive line but is more like 'ok' at run blocking.)

We have no running game, a poor offensive line, and an offensive coordinator who doesn't have anything resembling a coherent gameplan. You sure as crap aren't going to fix that with Trevor Lawrence of all people, but 'superstar QB' feels like the easy fix, so here we are.

I don't know why some people think the system around the QB is independent of the QB. It's largely symbiotic. We've seen plenty of times where the system suddenly looks much better with a better QB under center, just as we've seen times where an average QB suddenly looks better in a different system.

We don't need to zero in and say "we'll fix one, and then the other". Take advantage of the opportunities you have to collect talent.

But that is the trap in thinking a team is a QB away. That happened to Denver, Falcons, Browns, etc. It happens so often when those teams do not build a team first.

Lawrence could squeeze out one more win or two for the Hawks. But the cost long term is that you start to lose players because you have to let them walk due to Lawrence's contract.

And at that point no cutesy stuff or projects with the drafts as you have to nail those drafts like the Chiefs do to avoid talent depletion due to salary cap realities.

The Browns had a lot of pieces on the OL and defense when they traded for Watson.

That is true at the time they were loaded up with talent. But over time they have started to become depleted with their talent due to the Watson contract so their window of opportunity has closed fast.

Here's a list of Pretty-good to really-good QBs who have made it to the Super Bowl since 2000....I don't think any of these will get hall of fame consideration (It's a little early to say that about Hurts or Purdy I suppose, but I put them here).
Trent Dilfer
Kerry Collins
Rich Gannon
Brad Johnson
Rex Grossman
Joe Flacco
Cam Newton
Jimmy Garoppolo
Brock Purdy
Jalen Hurts
Nick Foles (or should we say Carson Wentz?)
Colin Kaepernick

I really hate the way the QB position has evolved in terms of the salary cap (next man up gets the top contract regardless of ability). I think Geno is giving us FAR more value at $25 million than Trevor Lawrence at an average salary of $55 million per year on his new contract. The QBs on this list had contracts that allowed a team to be built around them.

(If I were a GM, I'd be asking prospective QBs: do you REALLY think you're better than Patrick Mahomes? Then why should we pay you more than he makes?)

I don't even buy that Lawrence could squeeze out one more win or two. Statistically, Geno has been the (slightly) better QB during his time as a starter. Jacksonville had a better defense than us in both 2022 and 2023, but our records were identical.

This year, Trevor Lawrence had a defense roughly equivalent to our defense last year. We were a .5 game out of the playoffs last year. The Jags season has been over since November.

I'm struggling to fathom what people who would love to see us get Trevor Lawrence would have said if Geno had managed to get us only 4 wins last year.
