Why are you assuming that he'd keep Waldron? If Quinn were hired he'd bring in his own guys and set up his own program. He's certainly a good DC, but good coordinators don't always make good head coaches. How well does he manage big personalities? How does he manage the coordinators under him? His results on the Falcons was mixed,
Also, just because you hire an offensive based coach doesn't mean that they can't fix a defense and vise versa. Seattle has quietly shifted into an offensive team since 2019 under a guy known for his defense. Belichick was known as a defensive coach yet he fielded some of the most explosive offenses that the NFL has ever seen. Andy Reid's teams have a strong defense, yet he's known for his offense.
Fielding a strong defense or offense is about more than just specialization. It's about drafting correctly and finding the right people to run the team. It's also about building a program and managing big personalities. I'm not sure I'd want to give Quinn a chance. His team went down the drain as soon as Shanahan left.
Quinn had Shanny in ATL. Waldron would fit like a glove. Defensive coaches like QBs who don't turn the ballover so Geno would be fine as long as he keeps this up. They have one the best offenses in the NFL, a defensive coach would be licking their chops to take this job. Because one side of the ball is figured out.
He sees some of the talent in place being misused, and a bunch of picks to help rebuild it.
A Seattle scout leaked to the media anonymously a couple years ago that Pete Al Davis'd a lot of recent drafts, and the last draft felt like a JS draft. The bad drafting on defense is tied to Pete Carroll.
Seattle didn't quitely shift to being an offensive team. Their defense is just that bad. Productive QB play over these years has saved Pete from getting fired a lot sooner. But this wasn't the plan. Completely unintentional, Pete wants to be a defensive team he just doesn't know how anymore. No matter how many assets he throws at it.
Quinn wouldn't be coming in to be the next PC, who is God King of the Seahawks with total power over football operations, sitting over JS.
Quinn would be under JS. With a more traditional power dynamic.
I'm on board with any change right now. As long as a top level defensive coach is involved in the equation be it HC, or DC.
However, knocking HCs who got fired at their first stop is asinine. Pete was considered a failure in the NFL before Seattle, and Belichick as well before NE.
If anything it should be looked at as a positive. They've failed and now know not what to do next time.
I was down on Quinn myself at the end of his time in ATL. But Dallas had one of the worst defenses in the NFL and I'm thoroughly impressed with how he reinvigorated that side of the ball and produced immediately.
The other part of coaching is the people side of things and communication. DQ is excellent in these areas.
Team Dan Quinn.
