Pete and John have a plan, which I believe to be to re-stock the cupboards with youthful talent and develop them.
With almost $50M in dead cap space this year, the opportunities to sign a veteran QB that could take the team to the playoffs were very limited, and every one of them weren't without risk. Pete was hoping for the best... hoping that Geno could play better than he has, and that Drew Lock would prove that he should get another chance as a starting QB. Unfortunately, neither has materialized.
Pete certainly wants to win now, and I'm guessing that he has some degree of regret for sticking with Geno and Lock. But, tanking? It's not in Pete's DNA, so I say "no way".
The die has been cast for 2022. The team will play hard but we're likely headed for the season that none of us wanted. Getting to 9-8 or 8-9 would be somewhat of a win.
This. I agree with this. I think the front office had higher hopes for what was in the cupboard and coming down the pike.
I've been saying we'll play 500 ball this season - and again, whether that's 400 ball or 600 ball - it's all semantics.
I like PC enthusiasm - but I just gotta wonder at this point - what's the ******* point? I get that lock and geno are a bit bustier than anticipated - but honestly - no one thought we were bound for another owl with them.
Pete's up there. I think he's got like 1 or 2 years on his contract. Not enough time for a rebuild and a draft of an amazing RW like replacement QB.
I hate to side with the naysayers, and I am looking forward to the season - but I think even though PC is 'happier' with RW gone - I think we're kinda rudderless for the next 1 or 2 years. He's a bit of a lame duck now - with not enough time before proper retirement to re-harvest/reload and rejig things for another run.
I wish that were not the case - but it's seemingly increasingly futile this season. Yea, we might have a couple DB's and a 3-4 thing, and we got 14 and no e. Just doesn't feel right when at game 2 preseason, PC is on the post game presser saying "we're doing a bunch of stuff that doesn't make you win football games.".
I think there was something in the works post Russell that didn't pan out the way they wanted.
My guess: 500 ball ish this year. Pete leaves at the end of the year. I don't trust him at this point (unfortunately) with a 3 year rebuild. I don't think he has the chops, no matter how 'happy' he is.
Redzone for the win this year - and we'll see how it goes. I feel like we're whistling past the graveyard at this point a bit - unfortunately.
