Everyone but Bevell took their share of responsibility for the play. Bevell blamed everyone and took no responsibility for the play. Why he wasn't fired after that when the smoke cleared is something that remains a huge question mark for me.
Then he compounded it by trashing Lynch's short yardage record when it was really the poor playcall that made the 4th and 1 not work. I remember one that year with both RBs on either side of Russ in shotgun, at the snap the FB ran a flat route and it was a delayed handoff up the middle to Lynch. It had zero chance of working but he blames Lynch.

Yep, there it is.

Meddling is okay when you want it to be, and is otherwise simply a generic catch-all type of complaint you throw at him when anything goes wrong.

Consistency.

Oh he meddles and the one time he really needed to, he didnt. Great coaching.

I'm not so convinced it was a terrible call. How were the coaches supposed to know the Patriots had game planned specifically for that call?

Um, they forgot Brandon Browner was on the team the previous season and saw the play everyday in practice? Seriously?

They motioned Lynch out of the backfield. Mobile QB, bone crushing RB. The proper pass to call is a play action bootleg. Everyone "knows" Lynch is getting it, right? So the DBs take a bad step or two from the PA (which was a huge strength for us then), Russ has the option of running it in if no one pops open or sailing it out of the back of the end zone and have 2 more tries at it. Passing wasn't a terrible call, that particular pass play was atrocious.

You nailed it. That is precisely the play call I would have chosen there and always wished they did. Utilize the play action to move the D, bootleg out and he could run it in or drop an easy pass to his target for 6. Do that and we all aren't still bitching about the play 8 years later (which feels like yesterday).

I'm not even sure that Browner recognized it pre-snap. Pretty sure I read that Butler IDed the play. But Browner sure as shit wasn't going to get moved out of the way by whoever it was that was supposed to pick him.

Browner was the one that pointed it out in practice and drilled Butler after he got beat by the play. They both saw it coming. You could see Browner plow over the man that was supposed to pick him and Butler looking more like the receiver on the route than Lockette himself.

Browner arguably played a bigger role in blowing up the play than Butler himself.

Geez, guys, this was supposed to be a thread about training camp and the future, not some 8 year old play.

Ball should have hit the wrs hands a step beyond the pick and in his body. You can see Lockette slow and present himself to Russ, moving slowly behind it. He did the right thing. Ball was high and way inside.

Could the call have been different? Sure, but this play is as close to a sure thing as there is. A perfect defensive stop nets the play 2 yards or no gain.

And... Lynch was something like 1 for 4 on similar goal line situations that year.

I'd challenge somebody to find another instance where that play has been intercepted, ever. It's a gimme. That's why it was made illegal.

Still haven't rewatched that game. That one, nor the 05' loss.

That Lynch stat was heavily influenced by some of the stupid plays that were called. I think only one miss was a straight up power dive. I remember one of the failures involved shotgun, flanked by both RBs and the FB immediately flaring to the flat and it was a delayed handoff up the middle with no lead blocker.

Good info. Didn't know the details of the specific plays.

But bro... that doesn't make it easier to swallow. Not a happy fact.

I guess it still made sense to throw, given the TO situation and that running would have taken considerably more time off the clock. I mean, if the handoff is botchedz theres a fumble and recovery by us, or Lynch is stood up and the whistle is slow, the clock could have ticked dangerously low.

Don't disagree tbough that if you're gonna lose, then go out being carried on your shield. Run it. If they stop you, so be it.

Kearse was supposed to pick Browner which was never going to happen as Browner is twice his size. Kearse whiffed anyways.

Not a great throw, but Lockette was supposed to be where Butler was but he half-assed the play. Even if he gave a decent effort, chances are he doesnt catch it anyways or he doesnt score. It was a stupid play call especially with Lockette as the target.

Lynch would have gotten the TD. The defense was totally gassed and their goal line ranking that year was poor anyways.

A slant at the goal line with a crowded defense is anything but a sure thing.

I'm not opposed to a pass there, just not the pass they chose. Everyone and their mom thought Lynch was getting the ball. Why motion him out of the backfield when play action was one of our most successful staples? Took all the guessing away and now they know the playcall. Ludicrous.

I dont think he'll even sniff 45 a year. After this season, the cats outta the bag on Mr Unlimited. He doesn't have a coach to blindly protect him anymore.
This place will be fun here in a few weeks when we are basement dwellers and Russ is in the mix for mvp 😂
