There is no doubt in my mind this will happen. The only question is how many more millions of dollars per year does he want than Aaron Rodgers? $24 million per year would be my reservation point -- after that you are talking about having to release great players from our defense.

Sounds like Russell wants to be paid retroactively for his ELC.

If he does insist on that kind of dough per year, I would franchise him for 2 years then let him walk and get 1st round comp pick.

There is no such thing as a 1st round comp pick. Where do u come up with this?

Comp picks don't go that high. Their ceiling is 3rd.

This year's highest paid player ever is a bargain 5 years from now when the salary cap is 50 million higher than it is now. I can understand asking for it. I can understand negotiating for it.

Rodgers signed a 5 year, 110 million deal in 2013 that made him the highest paid player in the NFL on an annual basis. He isn't the highest paid any more. His cap hit for 2015 is behind Drew Brees, Eli Manning and Matt Ryan. I'm sure John will get the structure of the deal right in the end but given the names on the Spotrac Quarterback Cap Hit Rankings for 2015 (http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/quarterback), I can understand why Russell's camp would shoot for the moon.

Although true, it's not counting the fact that Rodgers got a pretty steep signing bonus. It's still the highest average salary, assuming he plays out the contract (which is likely with franchise qbs).

I assume Wilson will get a deal that will look something like what I put above....

4 years $90 million

2015 - $1,542,000 + Signing Bonus $34,000,000

2016 - $2,000,000

2017 - $15,000,000

2018 - $18,000,000

2019 - $21,000,000

Each of those years, some of that salary could be lowered in the base and added to in the form of a roster bonus, but that's the general picture as I see it.

The cap hit is the base salary plus the portion of the signing bonus for that year. The 34 million was spread out from 2013 through 2017 for cap purposes the way the contract is structured now. Yes, they can move that around after the fact, but the way it is right now, he isn't the highest paid QB anymore for next year.

Year Base Salary Signing Bonus Roster Bonus Workout Bonus Cap Hit
2013 $4,500,000 $6,650,000 - $500,000 $11,650,000
2014 $900,000 $6,650,000 $9,500,000 $500,000 $17,550,000
2015 $1,000,000 $6,650,000 $10,100,000 $500,000 $18,250,000
2016 $11,500,000 $6,650,000 $600,000 $500,000 $19,250,000
2017 $12,550,000 $6,650,000 $600,000 $500,000 $20,300,000
2018 $19,800,000 - $600,000 $500,000 $20,900,000
2019 $20,000,000 - $600,000 $500,000 $21,100,000

We couldn't take a 34 million cap hit for Wilson in 1 year. It would have to be distributed over a portion of the contract.

There is hometown discount, there is market value, and there is absolute absurdity.

Oh No!!!

The sky is falling!

Everyday some new negativity: Clark the woman beater, The FO didn't do enough due diligence, they overpaid for Lockett, Bennett wants a trade, Russell wants to be the highest paid player in NFL history. most all of this is pure speculative horse pucker.

Whatever, can't wait for there to be some actual football news instead of soap opera versions of 'As the stomach churns'.

I think this is true. The team signed Sherm and ET as the highest paid player for their position.

So everyone has to believe the team is willing to do the same thing for Wilson.

And, they signed both players around this timeframe in years past, so what's the hold up?

Wilson switched sports agencies for a reason. He signed up with a baseball agent for a reason. He wants baseball money. Period.

I think Wilson should get what he's worth. But to ask for a contract that's way above market value is nuts. Asking for a salary cap busting contract is nuts. There's bargaining at the table and there's this.

Slap the franchise tag on him and draft another QB - maybe two - next year.

Can't you franchise a QB for three years?

If RW was a free agent right now, how much do you think the bidding would end up at? I think $25 million AYP would certainly be within the range of possibility, and all it would take is $22.1 AYP for him to be highest paid ever.

RW wants to be paid what he has earned. And he will be. And it will be a lot of money.

I don't begrudge Wilson at all, but I think he wants to earn every dollar he possibly could. If they offered him $30 million AYP I bet he'd jump at it without any thought to how that might impact the strength of the roster. He has post career plans that involve huge sums of money. For all we know those post career plans might matter to him as much as his current career does.

I've argued many times already that Wilson's real value to the team is much higher than $20 million or even $25 million, so I'm not bothered by it. But I do think Wilson is totally playing hard ball here and leveraging to the max. At some point he might want to consider the hidden cost to his image.

1. His agent would be foolish to not ask for the most ever. Don't forget that they answer to a union and everyone else expects each member to do everything they can to improve the markets.

2. Hometown discount? He had nothing to with Seattle until he was forced to play here. Nothing "hometown" about Seattle to Russ. It wouldn't surprise me at this point if he is attracted to a bigger media spotlight back east. Russ has definitely grown into a "superstar" type persona.

First of all let's get this out of the way....my numbers were not CAP numbers, they were my guesstimates at what he'd get paid within each year. Obviously the Signing bonus is spread out for 5 years, this is why I called it a signing bonus.

Now as for Rodgers, of course he's not the highest paid this year, the way his contract is structured, this year wasn't meant to be that much, but franchise qbs, unlike other positions, will almost always be here through their contracts, so using the average salary is a good way to judge their contract value. Other positions you see a lot of back-ended deals where they never see the final year or two and that significantly lowers what they make per year.

The point here is that Wilson, even if he's asking to be the highest paid, he's going to want to see that over the course of his contract. He's not going to say he wants the annual average salary to be that of the highest year of anyone ever. Sure there are qbs making more than Rodgers THIS year, but over the course of his deal, nobody is making more per year.

Here is the deal, Sherman, and Thomas are the best two players at their position. People may argue that Revis is better, but I think that is a load of crap. Both Sherman, and Thomas could say "we are the best at our position" and nobody would bat an eye.

Wilson on the other hand is closer to the 8-10th best QB in the NFL right now. I understand as the salary cap goes up, players will demand a larger contract, and even players who are not necessarily the best in the league will demand top tier money. The issues here in my opinion is: how much guaranteed money is Wilson asking for? What does a "significant margin" actually mean? Is it just hundreds of thousands more, or is it many millions more than the best QB in the league?

If significantly more means MILLIONS more, and a record amount of guaranteed money, then I think Seattle may need to play hardball with Wilson or perhaps look in a new direction for a Quarterback.

That kind of salary would cripple Seattle for at least 4 years in my opinion, and in those 4 years we will have to make tough personnel decisions if we give in to Wilson's demands. The question I that has always lingered in my mind is if Wilson could be a volume passer. The reason why I bring up "volume passer" is because our defense will take a major hit if this kind of deal is signed. We WILL have to say goodbye to some very prolific players on defense in order to stay underneath the salary cap. This means the offense will have to find a way to move the ball better than they have to stay competitive. This will likely entail an increased workload for Wilson.

Can Wilson be a volume passer? I'm not sure. I say this because his playing style usually involves him taking an increased number of hits over somebody such as Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning. Even though he's cautious, I still see him take more large hits than most of the more traditional QB's I see play, even a QB like Ben Roethlisberger. I also think he's sorely lacking in identifying when teams are trying to blitz him. He needs to work on getting that ball out of his hand quicker.
