Pete, Jim (and now Chip) have been able to give their respective teams the added advantage of a head coach who is essentially also a scout. Coming from the college game, all of these guys are far more aware of the talent coming into the draft. That advantage dissipates the longer they're in the NFL.

This I totally agree with.

Even this year....Harbaugh wanted Eric Reid so bad because he recruited him out of high school. He's liked him all along.

Strangely tho, Harbaugh/Baalke has never selected one of his own Stanford players. He's taken 2 Trojans (both busts) and Carroll has taken at least 2 members of Harbaughs Cardinal (actually...was Baldwin an UDFA?).

Yes Baldwin was an UDFA which boggles the mind why Harbaugh wouldn't even spend a 7th for him likely knowing Baldwin would choose to go anywhere but there after being slighted and Sherman was a 5th round pick, which again boggles because Jim had the absolute most information on both of these guys and instead drafts Jenkins in the 1st and Culliver in the 3rd.

It's not even like you weren't hurting for receivers and DB's. Why in the world would he let both of these guys slip by and use much more valuable picks on lessor talent?

The big question is did he like these guys as much as he liked Reid?

Well he actually took a receiver form USC who busted (Ronald Johnson) and they selected a Corner in round 3 (Chris Culliver). If everyone had known how good Sherman was going to be, he'd have been selected far earlier.

Jenkins was LAST year...not the year Balwin came out. Their first round pick in Balwins year was Aldon Smith.

Pete knew. He'd told Sherman he'd be a great NFL corner when Richard was still in high school. Of course secondary is Pete's specialty, just like QB is for Harbaugh.

Great pick by the 'hawks, no question.

Random thought: I think I'd rather have cancer than live in a universe where the 49ers drafted Richard Sherman.
