Lets say it takes $5m to sign Mathis.

$3m cap hit in 2015, 1m cap hits in '16 and '17.

Would you rather have Mathis

OR

OC Chris Meyers for 1 yr, $1.5m
-8 years of starting in ZBS
-Top 5 Run Blocking OC in '15 (PFF)
- 33 Years Old

TE Zach Miller for 1 yr, $1.5m

In both scenarios, Seahawks cut or trade Kearse to free up about $1.9m, assuming the WR that takes his place will make $410k.

With Myers you cut LJP and save $685k.

So Mathis for $5m in cap space over 3 years

Or Myers and Miller for like $2m over 1 yr assuming LJP and the 3rd TE trade off?

Jake Long and Dwight Freeney could be considered aswell as Mathis, Myers, Miller.

Personally, I can't see how Mathis isn't worth 3.5 million. That said, I'm also in disbelief that someone hasn't already offered him that.

He's holding out for as close to the 5.5M he made last year...........and he'll probably get it if any more O-lineman go down during the next two pre-season games.

From what Pete said today, they like Mathis a lot, but his price is going to have to come down quite a bit for us to fit him under our cap.

NO.

This is one of those things like a commercial where it looks all juicy and perfect and then you get the real deal and it's smashed and microwaved, not necessarily in that order.

Many Eagles fans, BEFORE there was wind that Chip was going to cut him, were noting that he gave up more sacks and pressures last year than in the previous two years combined. He also showed issues with power in the running game. Dude has fallen off.

Yeah, it's new and it's a name. That doesn't mean it's really what you want.

Has anyone floated cutting Okung to fee up the necessary cap space to sign Mathis?

Okung's cap hit is over 7M, with only a 2.5M dead cap hit. Could Lewis, Bailey or Britt play a competent LT with an All Pro like Mathis next to them? idk, interesting conversation.

Don't really like the idea of losing our only decent lineman, OTOH, as oft as he's injured, you might not be to far off. I know theirs talk here about Kearse, now I'd be all for cutting Kearse to free up some space.

I'm no GM, but most cap specialists I've heard and read say that teams organize and manage cap by position groups. So it'd be more realistic that the cap space created for Mathis come from the O-line.

Besides, cutting Kearse only frees up 2.3M, not enough to cover the 3-5M for Mathis........and it creates a hole in the WR position group.

Okung is more than likely not going to be here beyond 2015, so if you have change to get an All Pro caliber lineman like Mathis that can play multiple positions, it's worth considering.

Not going to happen. Why would we cut our 27 year old starting LT 3 weeks before the regular season for a 33 year old guard? Also, if Okung signs elsewhere next year we get a compensatory pick, if we outright cut him this year we'll get nothing. Makes no sense to me.

Ive thought about it, especially since he's pretty injury prone.. Now and imo Slow ( hence all the false starts, he's trying to jump early).

I would prefer to not cut Okung, some team will heavily overpay for a SB winning LT and he should get us a very good comp pick because of it.

If Nowak makes over LJP, I would love for the Seahawks to sign OC Chris Myers to much cheaper than Mathis and utilize his starting experience and superb run blocking ability to train up Nowak, Soloki/Milton, and Glo on the inside.

Related note. Chris Myers announced his retirement today.

Evan Mathis’ deal is worth $4mil with incentives. He turned a $5.5mil deal down from another team because he wanted to play for a contender

So, it's basically exactly what he said he would sign for. Seems like a reasonable deal, one that Seattle probably would've entertained if their cap circumstances were different.

Let's hope Britt at LG is the answer...

I bet if Britt didn't show last Fri, Mathis would be a Hawk. Britt's play made the cost for the additional upside too high
