Professional or not, one consideration is the amount of pressure he had on him. We were supposed to suck. Can you imagine that game 1 stress?

He truly may have hit his ceiling but…he appears consistent enough to repeat his performance and even clear up some stuff.

It’s his spot now. All the bad press and outlook we had last year is water under the bridge.

I don’t see him being Top 3 but….he’s proven people wrong before.

Here is my issue with Geno, points on the board. His best was 3 TD's in 3 games last year and his QB ratings and completion % fell as the season progressed.

He completed over 80% of his passes in the first 2 games and was in the 70's midseason and his last 3 were in the 60's.

Those fumbles are also concerning.

I love his story and want him to win us a super bowl but 3 TD's a game isn't going to cut it. If we draft a future QB I think we are either going to see Geno lose the preseason competition or get benched during the season.

Is there really no "put up a similar season" option? That's what my "other" response indicates.

Geno's performance didn't seem especially flukey. Some will point out turnover-worthy throws, but his process is generally sound. He has a good command of the full field and sees the field pretty well. It's the same stuff I saw in preseason. Great accuracy, good timing. I thought I was being fooled by him in the preseason and that he'd regress severely, but he appears to be the real deal now.

He could regress, but I think he'll sustain about the same level of play.
I agree that there was nothing flukey or unsustainable about Geno's performance last year. Although Geno's completion percentage declined somewhat in the second half, I wouldn't say it was significant, especially given the other factors, such as the stretch of games in the second half of the season when the defense just stunk and we had to come from behind. Also, our running game disappeared for a time in the second half until it reappeared again at the end of the season.

Geno's stats for the first 8 games: 181/249 72% 13 TDs, last 9 games: 218/323 67% 17 TDs.

As for turnover-worthy plays, you have to analyze them on a case-by-case basis. At certain times in a game, a QB has to take calculated risks. For example, an interception on a hail mary just before halftime is meaningless. You can't be completely risk-averse and be an NFL QB. Yes, Geno had some unfortunate throws, but he certainly isn't one of those QBs where you're screaming at the TV saying, "What are you doing!" all the time.

With a better defense helping the offense a little and the C/RG spots
just being average or better would do wonders for Geno and the offense.

Penny went down, so there is that to take into consideration, because Geno ABSOLUTELY needs another RB to help move the chains, LOVE K-9 but the job is not a One Man Show.
Center play was pretty pathetic for most of the year, RG was also pretty suspect.
Two Rookie Tackles.
And still needs a WR-3.
Defense SUCKED for most games last season.
-------------------------------------------------------
He's not starting from ground zero like he did last year, and now will have a little more continuity with his teammates.
Hopefully there will be some better play @ the Center position.
And I'm Hopeful that the Defense gets it together because that can only HELP Geno to win more games.
Oh and, to a bunch of y'all who had quit on Geno LAST year and are continuing down that same path? he'd PROVEN A BUNCH OF Y'ALL WRONG, last year, & I figure he'll take his play up another notch, book it.

One reason why I think he could improve, and the offense in general, is that the coaching staff has a full offseason to build around him and scheme with his strengths in weaknesses in mind - unlike last offseason where they didn't know who the Day 1 starter would be.

More confidence in the system, more reps, more rapport = improvement.

A draft that bolsters the interior line, and maybe draft a guy like JSN = improvement.

I'm sure Pete has gotten into his ear about the turnovers and the near picks... I see his decision-making improving.

There are reasons why he could regress as well.

Do you think he will regress? If so, why?
He was very lucky last year:

"Hugh Millen raised an interesting point on KJR on Friday. He pointed to a stat provided by PFF listing ‘turnover worthy plays’ by each quarterback. Smith had the second most in the NFL, just behind Josh Allen. Millen also pointed out that Allen had far more ‘explosive’ passing plays and a lot more rushing yards to compensate for his erraticism.

Building on the point, he then noted that when looking at the top-10 quarterbacks — on average 80.6% of their turnover worthy plays had resulted in actual turnovers. In comparison, Geno Smith saw only 48% of his turnover worthy plays actually result in an interception.

That’s staggering.

If he’d thrown the 80.6% average like the rest of the QB’s in the top-10, he would’ve had 25 picks. Even if he’d had a still well below average 65% — he would’ve led the league in turnovers.

I’m not even sure if this accounts for stuff like the pick-six against San Francisco in Seattle which was called back for a fortuitous penalty. That play was blown dead, after all. So it could be even worse than these numbers suggest.

Regardless, Smith had incredible luck when it came to turnovers this season."

Our defense sucked
We couldn't run against teams that stacked boxes or were a really good run d forcing us to have to pass and if you are one dimensional almost every QB will get a tough run
I'm bettin we are better on both sides of the ball so guessin he has a pretty good year all in all

The mistakes made were NOT ALL on him...Had Penny stayed half assed healthy, & the Defense hadn't sh*t the bed, Geno wouldn't have HAD TO TRY so damned hard to pick up THEIR SLACK, THEIR MISTAKES.
Hell, as it is, he GOT US INTO THE DAMNED PLAYOFFS, Made COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR....Hey!!, It wasn't the CRAPPY PLAY by the Defense that got us into the playoffs....How damned much do some of y'all think Geno has to "Carry" his team???
The man worked his ever lovin' ass off to get us into the post season, and what he's getting from a bunch of flunkies here, is a crapload of disrespect for what he's accomplished, coming out of the Follow Russell Wilson Chute and becoming CBPOTY????, What y'all Be Smokin' by not getting behind him??
He's also proven that he ain't no Russell Wilson....THANK THAT IMAGINARY MAN IN THE COSMOS, eh?

3 TDs a game isn't going to cut it?

You want him to score more than 51 passing touchdowns?

You can't be serious. He threw the 4th most touchdowns in the league last year. Only Mahomes, Allen, and Burrow threw more.

Do you think the tape on Geno from years prior to joining the Seahawks is in any way relevant? Do you think teams would gain anything by watching it?

Best to judge a player within their real environment. He played his best ball in Seattle. His tape should help him to gauge where he is at this stage of his career. He can get better, but he needed a realistic barometer against starters. Now an off-season to make adjustments.

I would say the answer to the question depends on the performance of the players around Geno. If they get the run game going consistantly and give Geno time to throw the ball Geno will surpass last season. If they dont he is likely to regress. Just my take.
