I know the conventional wisdom is Pete WONT switch to a 3-4, but I'm not so sure. He's done nothing BUT adapt and change his ways since joining the team. From Bates, from flirting w/ J McDaniel, from Bandit, Hass, Tjack, Wilson's zone-read, he's adapted when he's had to. The Hawks defense is actually built for a 3-4, from a personnel perspective.

Pete would do it, if he thought it was best. Hell, he let Gus call the plays.

Sure we could do that but having few 3-4 defenders even with a hybrid D makes it less likely and it's going away from PC's strengths. Fix the DL with a vet and a few rooks and it'll be fine. Complicate it was an overhaul and move to a 3-4? We would miss the playoffs, I suspect, and that seems inconceivable and detrimental for a team on the rise like the Hawks

What does this mean exactly and where's your proof?

I don't know what this means and have no proof, but I'll just add that in his book Pete says he prefers to promote from within the program and he encourages his coaches to move up when they have opportunities to do so, whether it be on his staff or with another team. That's why he has happy staff and happy players. He's not a tyrant and truly wants every member of the program to maximize their potential and achieve their goals.

I don't know why we need to post about the Dan Quinn rumor in this thread but it's an interesting option:

Quinn is the only guy out there that can take Pete Carroll's principles, work with them, and actually take them to the next level. Seto, Norton, etc. will just be puppets if we're being honest with ourselves. Quinn is a DLine guru, exactly what we need right now, and can expand upon the talent this defense already has. If I'm Paul Allen, I'd pay a kings ransom to get Quinn back in Seattle.

Depends what his career or personal aspirations are. In Seattle, he'd have access to elite level talent and a playoff calibre team. He could parlay that into any job he wants in a few years. And it's not like he has zero-connection to Seattle.

Dan Quinn not only knows the scheme, he ran it pretty much at Florida. He had a buck DE (Leo) played Shariff Floyd at 5 tech and then moved him inside and moved a little bit smaller D tackle Dominique Easley out at 5 tech then inside. Also would play some single deep safety at times to move Elam in the box because he is a thumper at SS, and would love to blitz the free Safety as well . The thing that worries me is they would struggle to get pressure with just the front 4 (doesn't help that his LEO was out all year with an ACL) but they weren't best at pressuring the quarterback, until the two freshman came into their own. They were well coached and always motivated and won Florida a lot of games, because the offense was horrendous. In 2010 they were horrible at forcing turnovers. He somehow changed that around, at times it would be ridiculous at how many fumbles they would force. Dan Quinn is my favorite coach at Florida, but the Hawks are my number 1 love, so I will be doing cartwheels if Quinn comes to Seattle.

People talk a lot about it being "Pete's defense" and whoever the DC ends up being will just be a puppet. I don't really think that's true. Yes it's basically Pete's recipe, but he wants somebody with a really bright football mind who can have some real input on what spices to use. Pete doesn't seem like the type to waste time surrounding himself with "puppets" and "yes men". He would look for somebody with a similar defensive philosophy to his own so they aren't butting heads on the fundamental stuff, but somebody who also brings their own flavour to the table.

And considering the biggest weakness in the defense last year was generating pressure from the front 4 (which is what Pete desperately wants to do), it only makes sense to bring in a D-line specialist to run the D. The secondary is set with Kris Richard and doesn't need any greater level of attention that what it's getting now. Those guys are all pros back there (hell, half of them are litterally ALL PRO's).

Yes Pete seems to like to promote from within, but another thing I've noticed about Pete is that he seems to think of everyone thats ever been a part of his program or his staff to still be a part of his program. Even if they're no longer in the building. I can totally see Pete still thinking of Dan as one of "his guys" and bringing him back to the program in an increased role.

I think Dan's the man. Hopefully they open the wallet and get him back here.

I would be down with Quinn coming back or promoting Seto. Quinn on the strength of his resume, and credit for moving Bryant to the five tech end. Seto promoted from within as the secondary was the strongest unit of the defense. Also, I would like to look for college DC and assistants to fill positions as our team is young, Kaepernick 2x a season, and we need coaches that have experience against diverse schemes the NFL is transitioning to.

No to any Gregg Williams or blitz happy DC, I want a sound base defense that utilizes rotational depth on the D-Line to create mismatches for pressure. Those blitz happy schemes only work for a short while and elite QB's tear those schemes apart.

It funny you say that given we blitzed on both plays in the last 31 seconds.

They sent one extra defender on a blitz (5-man front) and had a rookie safety coming off a 4-week suspension as the only guy sitting back in a soft zone by himself. So I wouldn't say it is that funny, especially considering it cost us the game.

I've still yet to hear one person explain to me why we had a rookie coming off a suspension being the only person assigned to cover the soft belly "underneath" where you know Atlanta is going to be sending Tony Gonzalez, only the best TE to ever play the game.

The worst part is knowing that ALL YEAR that opposing defenses were KILLING us right in the same area where Gonzalez caught that pass.

I will never forgive Gus Bradley for costing us a SuperBowl run. Goodbye and good riddance.

Looking forward to Dan Quinn, hoping he fixes some of those issues.
