Would better pass protection make Russell Wilson better?

Having said the above, I believe there is something to the original post. While a bad line doesn't help anyone be a better qb, some people do thrive under pressure. Wilson is one of those people. When we see him at his best is when he has to be. When things have broken down, the game is on the line, receivers not open, etc. he has to make things happen, and he does. This may be why it appears that a bad line makes him better.

If he had a great line all the time, they would probably have to make a Wilson rule stating that the qb had to throw in under 3 seconds or leave the pocket. That is the only way it would be fair to other teams.

With 99% of the QB's in the league I would say that the answer to this question is obvious: Of course better pass protection would make the QB better. With Russell Wilson i'm going to go against logic and say that it would actually hurt RW's game. I think he's better off behind our current o'line, with their constant break downs in protection, then he would be behind an o'line that provided a consistent 5 or 6 seconds to stand in the pocket and survey the field.

I know most of us don't want to believe it, but I do believe that his game is impacted by his lack of height. You especially see it in the lack of ability to have a quick passing game over the middle. He seems to be much better when he's moving around in the pocket creating angles to see through, or moving out of the pocket all together. In this way I think the o'line break downs help Russell's game as long as he's nimble enough to avoid the rushers because it creates new angles for him rather then just sitting stationary in a perfect pocket. It also gets him out into the field where he's a threat to run so maybe the LB's or DB's will break off coverage to try and support against the run, further opening up passing lanes.

Maybe, just maybe, Tom Cable is a genius in trying to find run blocking beasts who are a bit more weak in their pass protection.

Thoughts? Am I right? Am I an idiot? Am I right in this instance, but an idiot anyway?

(btw, i'm not saying this as a negative on RW. I would not trade him for any QB in the league right now)

The answer to the main question of the thread is what I consider a "no brainer". Absolutely. RW is dangeRuss with a bad OL, he is still able to make big plays in the passing game each week on a consistent basis. With a better OL protecting him, he could be more devastating. Especially when you realize the weapons he has around him. Better pass pro may mean that Zach Miller is able to go out as receiver more, then Rice, Baldwin, and Tate become more valuable threats. Add in Kearse to that. It also helps Lynch and Turbin become more effective as well. They can be threats to run or catch passes from the backfield. RW is very intelligent, that's the biggest asset he offers. He can use that intelligence more effectively given more time which is what better pass protection would do. Right now, he may not even have time to think since he's running for his life. It's more reaction. Russell, IMO, would be a Drew Brees' like passer if he had better pass protection. That's a great thing.

Russell has lost several linemen as well, does not get rid of the ball quickly, and the offense is struggling.

So the answer is yes. Water is also wet.

I actually think it has more to do with our receiving corps lack of separation than it does the OL blocking.

I have noticed that as well. That is a huge part of the issue. Rice is having a terrible time of it for some reason. Did you notice how many balls that Rice is catching are jump balls or Wilson has to through to a very small windows its defenders hanging off him?

Of course it would. I think the pressure is also why some of his throws have a tendency to sail on him as well.

How he plays can be improved by not having to run for his life all the time. Good protection would be helpful we are just lucky we have a quarterback who can improvise when not well protected. His being able to move about is a great thing too. Wilson aside a better protection line will help our run game period.

He would easily be better. I don't think he would stay in the pocket for 6 seconds, he would probably roll out before then, and doing so by choice is much better than doing so because you have to

Wilson has some flaws but i do think better protection would translate to more production.
